Subject: 04 SXT 3.7 engine problem IP: Logged
Message: I have an 04 SXT club cab with the 3.7 liter. When you first start it after it has sat for awhile (at least an hour) and take off, there is a loud rattle. Sounds like it is coming from the exhaust area. It only does it for the first few minutes of driving then it won't do it again until you turn the truck back off and let it sit again. Any suggestions?

Message: I have a 97 3.9 L, and i had the SAME problem. It turned out to be the heat shield on the Catalytic Convertor AND a bracket came loose INSIDE the muffler...which i had to replace. Just get underneath your truck, and knock the exhaust pipe(when it has sat and cooled of course) and you will probably hear it rattle.

heat shield. sometimes they are just loose enough to rattle when cold but after getting warmed up and expanding they no longer rattle.
