Subject: 99 V6 Intermittent starting problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 V6 3.9. This problem is getting worse and the dealer is no help at all. The truck is having an intermittent starting problem. You turn the key and just here a click. All lights come on, fuel pump comes on, but truck doesn't turn over. If I turn the key on and off really fast the truck will eventually start. Sometime all it takes is to try it again and it will fire on the second try. Last night when I went to start it, there was no click at all, but most of the time there is a click (just one)
Here are somethings I have done already: Checked battery cables, replaced battery, replaced plugs, rotor, cap, checked starter connections, had throttle body serviced, had starter tested/checked.
Has anyone else on here had or seen this problem? What should I check/replace next? Thanks so much!

Message: Try the ignition switch. It sounds like maybe a loose wire or contact inside the switch?

Message: I had thought about checking that next. I was wondering, however, is there anything else I should look at between the ignition switch and the starter? Is there a known issue for this sort of thing? A bad relay perhaps, or a wire that is known to come loose...that sort of thing. Thanks again.

Message: Yes, relays do occasionally go bad. Check that first. Sometimes it is something as simple as a corroded pin.

Message: Can you tell me which relay you are referring to? Also where is it located etc...

Message: It should be in the power distribution box under the hood just behind the battery. Just look at the inside of the cover, and that will tell you which relay to look at. Other than that, it depends what kind of transmission you have. If manual: look at the clutch safety switch(located just behind the clutch pedal) If Automatic: look at the neutral interlock safety switch (usually located on the side of the transmission) Good luck!!

Message: All the relays look good. I think I was reading on here about a wire harness by the driver side wheel well that can sometimes get a coroded wire in it. I am not sure what harness they are talking about. Any thoughts?

Message: I haven't heard of a corroded wire, but the wire harness I think you're talking about is on the driver's side under the dash/steering column. You can see it by looking under the dash and look up and to the left(?) I think. The problem you were describing sounds like a loose contactor(relay) making intermittent contact or the ignition switch contacts/tumblers doing the same.

Message: I think (hope) my problem has been fixed. I took my truck to an electrical mechanics shop - they rebuild starters and such. It cost me $60 and I haven't had any problems starting my truck since. So I have my fingers crossed and will report back if the trouble returns...

Message: I have a2001 dakota that makes a click sound when I try to start it, sometimes it takes a dozen tries before it starts, but my troubles don't end there--when i finally get it started it is hard to put it in to gear and back into park, I need to wiggle the shifter and it would finally move.
Any help on these problems would be a BIG help Thanks a ton
