Subject: IDLE PROBLEM IP: Logged
Message: PROBLEM-THE BATTERY ON MY 98 DAKOTA WENT DEAD A
COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. WHEN I STARTED IT UP, THE
TRUCK WOULD NOT IDLE OUT (JUST SHUT DOWN). I HELD
THE RPM'S AT 1500 FOR FIVE MINUTES AND IT IDLED
RIGHT OUT. NO PROBLEM FOR A WEEK OR TWO. NOW,
EVERY 4/5 DAYS THE TRUCK STARTS UP THEN SHUTS
DOWN. I HOLD THE RPMS AT 1500 AND IT IDLES RIGHT
BACK OUT. NO PROBLEMS DRIVING, JUST ON START UP.
ANY CLUES!!

Message: Probably when your battery went dead your PCM lost it's memory, ( basically you rest your PCM) your problem could be in the way you started it for the first time after the dead battery, if you put your foot on the gas to soon after you started it you messed up the PCM's idle setting. I would try resetting the PCM.
1. disconnect neg. on Battery
2. turn key to start & hold for 30 seconds
3. reconnect battery
4. start truck and let idle for a min. or 2 ( don't touch the gas )
5. turn truck off
6. truck should be ready to go after this, it will take your PCM about 50-200 miles to relearn it's air/fuel settings
