Subject: TB screw,I messed with it IP: Logged
Message: I recently drilled the plug on the TB adjusting
screw.I was having idling problems.I fixed the
idling problem ( not related), but anyway the
truck (98 3.9L 4x4)will not start in the moring
without holding down the gas pedal, and letting it run for 5 sec. After that I can let off the pedal
without it dieing.I dont think I was supposed
to have touched the screw.Sombody else has had to
of done this before. How do you re-set the screw.

Message: The problem was the TB plates were open too far,
and the IAC was intern closing the airbypass
port in the TB.I removed the air intake housing
from the TB.Turned the screw to close the TB
plates, and I watched the IAC open just a crack.
This made the truck start just like it used too.

Message: Jim, doesn't that make you wonder it wouldn't start "without holding down the gas pedal, and letting it run for 5 sec?" It would seem that you were aggravating the situation. I think most people would have thought the plates would have to be more open, but you have shown that just the reverse is true. As you saw the IAC simply can't do it's job if the screw holds the throttle plates open.
Unless you were to remove the IAC, the so-called idle screw appears to serve no purpose. I'm not sure what the factory's intentions were, but it does serve to prevent ill-fitting throttle plates from sticking in the fully closed position. This may well be to sole purpose of the screw.
