Message: i replaced my air filter with a k&n drop in air filter. for $55 i got an extra 10-15 hp and instead of replacing it when it is dirty i can clean and oil it for less money. it should also improve gas mileage slightly but its hard for me to tell sense i have only had it a month and it is winter time when gas mileage tends to suck. i just boughgt the truck 2 months ago and have been changing out other stock parts to so it makes it even harder to evaluate. and i live in the traffic capital state of NJ. look into getting the entire k&n cold air intake system and get even more hp, spend more to. get a better than stock muffler too such as flowmaster. check out www.speedtweeks.ca

Whoa. That just pegged the BS meter.
What shop ran that on a dyno to prove it?
"should also improve gas mileage slightly"
Nope. I've been using the drop-in for 6 months: zero improvement in gas mileage, and very little change in power. It just makes the truck sound throatier. But the drop-in is just more maintenance than a regular filter.
A cold air intake, however, should help a little.

Message: There should be a LITTLE more power since you are letting in more air than before...though it prolly wouldn't be even close to noticeable on the "butt dyno." Not sure bout the gas mileage part...you'd think there'd be a minute increase in that too. Though I will definitely agree that there's no way in hell there was a 15 hp increase by using a K&N filter...lol. Sorry mike m, but just cuz the ads say, "Gain up to 15 HP!!!11!1 OMFG!11!! ROTF!!" (sorry...had to add a lil to it...lol), doesn't mean you actually gain that.
Kinda like the Lose 50+ lbs! weight loss ads...the fine print says "results not typical."

Message: k & n air filter is an overpriced not a filter joke - the VW bug used a steel wool screen and oil for years.
Do a search on this site.
talk microns and flow not decals.

Everyone says that, but it's at least one inch smaller in diameter than the stock filter, which would offset any gain in the element letting more air through.

Message: Hmm...could be since I'm using an round filter instead of the drop-in that fits in my stock airbox. Mine lets in a ton more air. lol

Message: I have tried all sorts of air filter combinations on v6 dak and the one that seem to run the best was a home made open element with the K&N air filter and the extreme flow lid. This combination made the v6 dak very responsive. The one one part that I did not like was the resonance it made in the cab at WOT around 3500 to 4000 rpm it was deafening, this is on a GEN 3 dak, the engine sets back further under the hood than a Gen 2. Now I am running a K&N Fipk for the GEN 3. I found a guy that had one cracked that he was willing to sell it to me for 50 buck and made a home heat shield out of the bed liner that come off the tail gate of the neighbors Ford Ranger pickup. This filter combination works as well the open element unit I had and it draws much colder air in to the throttle body. I have 2 of the the cheap digital temperature gages that I use to test my air cleaner combination, one for outside air and the other is used to measure air temperature right into the throttle body. When I am running on the freeway at 65mph the temperature differential is only 2 degrees, in stop and go traffic that differential would rise to about 7 degrees. The open element had a differential of 10 degrees on the freeway and 20 to 70 degrees in stop and go traffic. Since it would draw its air from under the hood, in stop and go traffic it would rise very quickly. I have also tried a chrome air intakes connected to the stock air hat and it worked fairly well, if I would have made a heat shield for it it would have worked even better.
