Could be a few different things...bands or one of the solenoids for starters, clogged filter, etc.

I have a 97 3.9L and my trans slipped in low gears for some time. I finally had the valve body modified with a shift kit. No more transmission problems now.

a shift kit isn't a fix for an ailing tranny

smitty (josh) hit on the first thing you should check

you should start with a fluid and filter change
get it done soon and you could possibly save yourself from much larger headaches

my tranny is now shifting after a fliud filter change. I used ATF +3 and it is full, so I can't figure out why it is now slipping. And it seems to only do it when I am turning.
