Message: So track it down...could be something as simple as a heat shield missing a bolt. Get a buddy to help you find the problem...if it HAS to be in drive one of you sit there holding the brake while the other person gets down on all fours and checks underneath for the source. For obvious safety reasons unless you really trust your buddy...I don't recommend crawling UNDER the truck or anywhere where you could be crushed while the truck is in drive.

Message: When the Cat Converter goes bad they tend to rattle, very annoying. Crawl under the truck (after letting it cool a few hours) and hit the cat with your hand or foot. If you hear rattling, it needs replacing. Look on e-bay for a cheap hi flow unit. I paid $30 for mine.

Message: And when you find out that it is the Cat Converter. Don't go to the Dodge dealer for a replacement. I have a 97 Dak and am on my third Cat Converter. the original and the second one were Dodges. I got the third one from the Shop who helped me with my new exhaust and It has lasted longer than both of the others combined.

Message: If it's the cat & has less than 80,000 mi., the dealership must replace it free of charge. EPA regulations.
