Subject: Low Oil Pressure IP: Logged
Message: I was coming home a couple of nights ago and as I pulled out to pass someone my check gauges light came on, and sure enough my oil pressure had bottomed out. I added a quart at a quick mart and limped home with the pressure below 40, but still in the ok range. The problem seemed to go away for a few days. Then tonight It happened again only not as bad. I do have a slow drip leak that I need to fix. It is the rear seal though so I'm not too anxious to part with the $500 to fix it. I've been living with the drip for about 6 months. Just wondering what might be causing the low pressure. The dip stick shows I'm in the normal range for oil in the rig. It is a V6 ( I'm not sure about the liters). I will get the oil changed and replace the filter this weekend. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Message: could be a partially plugged pickup on the oil pump. one qt. low shoud"nt cause no oil pressure.you could try to flush out the sytem but if there is alot of sludge it may plug the pickup screen worse.

Message: get the truck nice and warm and then change your oil, that should help anything loose come out, sounds to me like you have a partially plugged pick-up or a collapsed oil filter, so change the oil and filter before you drive the truck, driving on low oil pressure eats bearings..

Message: I just went through this same problem a few weeks ago. I had a partially clogged oil filter and the sending unit also was plugged. Change your sending unit(its very easy to do with the sending unit socket). The sending unit is only around 20 bucks. Change the oil and filter too of course and see what you got. If after these easy changes you still have low pressure then do an engine flush and pray that it helps or else you will likely be in for some labor $$$
Another trick that Larry tells us V6 guys is to use the oil filter that goes on the older 318s. The '88 318 filter is the right one. I did this and it does give a higher oil pressure. Flows more being bigger, I guess.

Message: Had the same problem, and it was the oil
pump intake. The screen on the intake was
totally sludged up, I'm guessing it was due to
oil additives, which I will never use again. Do
check the screen, if not it's a very expensive fix
when you roast a bearing.
