Subject: 98 Dakota Problems IP: Logged
Message: I have had my 98 about 6 months now, truck has 91k on it. I am having 3 problems at this time. Any help will be appreciated. First, overheat/coolant loss. I have changed all hoses,t-stat and gasket, and rad cap. Slowly looses coolant somewhere, no hissing or steam, wet spots or anything to indicate leak, also when cold upper hose is collasped under a vacuum.HELP. Next is engine ping under acceleration.Plugs, wires, cap rotor all new, premium gas did not help, Truck has lots of go, just pings alot. Last, tranny slip when cold, all is good when warm. Wont shift into high or O.d. without feathering gas pedal. All new parts bought at a real parts store, not auto zone and the like. I have been a life long chevy guy and this is my first dodge, do not ever want to own a chevy again.

Message: Craig:
your problem with pinging sounds like a leaking plenum gasket. Look down the bores of the throttle body with the butterflys open and if you see puddles of oil it is leaking and will make your truck ping. If that is not not it you may have carbon build up in the cylinders. Buy some seafoam cleaner at napa or other parts store and follow the directions.
Water leak - are you sure your t-stat housing is not leaking. sometines they dont leak enough to cause a drip and the coolant evaporates from the engine heat. It could also be a leak in the intake manifold /head gasket. If it is you should have a kind of sweet smell from your exaust.
There are other reasons but these are the most common.
