Subject: 92 3.9L - Stall while braking IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, wondering if anyone has had this problem and whether or not you've figured it out. I have a 92' 3.9L 4x4 5-speed that stalls while driving ever so often. It only happens when I push in the clutch and step on the brakes in traffic. The RPM's just drop straight down to 0. If I push in the clutch without touching the brakes, it runs like normal. The strange part is, this just happens roughly one day out of every 30 and it'll do it for the entire day, normally. Cold or warm weather does not matter. I've put a Magnaflow catback on it, as well as a new battery, starter, battery and starter cables, coil, spark plugs and wires, and distributer...all better than OEM. Other than the stalling, the engine runs like a top...
Any suggestions? Fuel filter, maybe?
Thanks,
DJbot

Message: Good point...do you think it would still do this only one day a month, though. Either way, I'll check it out when I get out of work.

Message: Well, I had a chance to get out and look at the vacuum hose in question and it's solid...not cracked, not collapsed. I was so hoping that was the root of the problem. Then, drove to lunch and it died on me while braking for a right hand turn at a stop light...
Any more sugestions?
And many thanks,

Message: Check your EGR circuit...I had an '88 van with the 3.9L that would do the same thing with the EGR hooked up. Turned out there was a little vacuum delay valve (plastic little thingy) inline with the EGR vacuum line that was supposed to allow the EGR to close quickly but mine had gone bad allowing the vacuum to hold the EGR open too long and thus killing the van when slowing down. I ended up disabling the EGR because of it (I would have had to buy a new EGR just to get the delay valve and I was feeling cheap back then). It might be what's going on...

Message: Crawl under the dash and under the hood and see what the brake pedal and actuating rods might be contacting when you push the brake. If a wire is too close to the pedal or rod and it has worn off some insulation, it may be shorting out at certain times and spots when you push the brake pedal down.

Message: i'd go with EverWiser's idea. the egr valve sounds logical to me. there is a vacuum line going right to the egr valve, unplug it and put a golf tee in it. then drive it like that for as long as it takes to find out if that was your problem (some of these trucks run better without the egr).

Message: I'm no machanic, but I had the same excact problem and still do however I unhooked the Mass airflow sensor and it actually stayed running. Does it take a long time to keep running when it's cold? Let me know.

Message: Thanks again for all the info...
Well, bentvalve, I just happen to know the wiring under the dash is clean, because when I got the truck the wire harness was nearly rotten through and through. That was my first delimma with this thing. Thanks though.
The EGR sounds like a plausible idea. When I got home last night I practically took the whole intake off, checking for leaks in all the vac hoses and loose bolts around the TB and Intake Mani...as per the Haynes manual.
And, no, Chris. This truck has always just fired right up, cold or not, the second I hit the ignition. If possible, even quicker after the Magnaflow.
When I was driving home last night from work it was still stalling, but when I would try to start it, in traffic mind you, it would crank for a little while and I had to give it a lot of gas to get it from stumbling to running. That's the first time that really has happened. (Although I normally just pop the clutch while rolling). Anyhow, once I wake up a little I'm going to get out and see what I can do.
Thanks,
DJbot

Message: OK, making some progress. Took the EGR off to look at the poppet valve underneath and it's stuck in the open postion, not to mention there's and 1/8 inch of crud inside the EGR and the EGR port on the intake mani. I'm going to get a new EGR this Friday and install, hopefully that's it.
About that crud. I've seen a lot of talk about carbonization. Does this have anything to do with what I'm seeing. Either way, my interest is piqued about getting rid of carbon, based on what I've read about with the power gains and "freshening up" an engine.
Thanks again guys...I can't tell you how important it is that I not go pay a mechanic to do something that I can do myself...but, I'm sure you all know that feeling.

Message: the egr is definetely your problem if it is stuck open, you can test egr valves by putting a constant vacuum on them, if they kill the motor they are good. so basically yours was stuck open(killing the motor), as for the carbon on the egr valve, you can not get rid of that, exhaust will always contain carbon unless your truck ran a perfect combustion which isnt going to happen because we run rich to avoid detonation. as for "freshening up" you could just run some seafoam or an equivalent through the system unless you want to pull the motor apart to clean it piece by piece.
