Message: yep, a double post, my bad...just read another post about EGR valves and it said that post-1995 models do not even have them? And I wanted to add that my truck messing up after it reaches operating temperature...And it seems like the initial sputter/miss is always around 50mph (i think that's 3rd gear on my auto tranny). C'mon you geniuses!! one day we'll get it right!

Message: Sounds like a problem with vss circuit or the pcm. I appologize [vehicle speed sensor]& [power train control module. I hate to say it, but the easyest way to pin that down is to have a technician take the vehicle out for a field test this is done with the scan tool linked to the vehicles computer this tool tells the technician everything that is going on with the vehicle in this case while it,s being driven so even if the vehicles computor cannot capture a problem the scanner can.

Message: I had two seperate techs from seperate shops take it for a drive and one said it was the ignition coil (replaced it) while the other one said it was the spark plugs....are they just stupid, seriously? These were ASE certified too...PCM's sound expensive...does my truck have anything equivalent to an EGR?

Message: your truck shouldn't have an EGR.
You're not getting ANY codes? it may be best to do as bsasteve said "have a technician take the vehicle out for a field test this is done with the scan tool".
if it starts @ about 50mph, doe sit do it at any other times? if not, it could be a driveline vibration instead of a miss.

Message: Hey buddy does the sputter and or miss breafly accur at 50 or does it just do it for a little bit and then go away once you've reached 60 or so. Reason i asked is dodge trani's are as of late known for torque converter shutter my old buick had this same issue finally got so pissed off between the 307 and 200r4 i put a cinder block on the gas and slapped into low up against a tree untilo it blew. Got to admit it cured the problem. Was pretty damn funny to especially when you're half in the bag.

Message: well if I can get it past 50, the problem is gone.there is news on the situation however- today before heading to the gym, my dad told me he can hear a ticking sound when I'm backing out of the driveway. Thus, I pulled a chuck norris and rode under the hood down the road (only makes sound while on the gas) and it sounds like a ticking/rattling coming from the alternator?? I'm not alternator savvy, but could I have some sort of jacked-up rectifier or something? I'm gonna go to the junkyard tomorrow and see if I can pick up an alternator for cheap...
Now this torque converter you speak of, wouldn't a mechanical problem like that cause a rather permanent/constant problem? Cuz I drove all night tonight, I odo'd about 60miles without incident...

Message: Whoa thier first of all that ticking noise should be easily found with a mechanics stethiscope or something like a long screwdriver. If you're brazen enough to ride under the truck this should be a breeze but BEWARE of rotating parts and electrical components. Second the voltage regulator is part of the computer yes it's a dodge thing. But when you said it rattled or ticked, that and the other symptoms together hmmm let me think oh i got it CHECK THE CATYLITIC CONVERTER trust me on this one my dads 97 did the exact same thing at 20,000 and yes i THINK their was a recall on those. The two other things under the hood and in the area of the alternator that make that sound are 1 the tensioner assy. and 2 that Fing clutch fan. But now that you told me this it really sounds like a bad cat most of the time you can check it by banging on it if you hear it rattle inside it needs to be replaced. Second piece of advice when you do pin down the problem or problems unless covered under warrenty, DO NOT USE OEM parts they suck go to NAPA buy in large thier parts are far better than most others.

Message: My old '88 had a sputter and hesitation. I replaced the CAT, the Map sensor, O2 sensor, plugs, wires, distributer and more... nothing worked! It turned out to be timing... save yourself some money and check the timing before replacing everything.
