Subject: Catalytic Converter and Heater Core? IP: Logged
Message: Unfortunately I have started to smell the rotten eggs after the truck warms up, it goes away after a couple of minutes. Any ideas on cleaning one out before I attempt to replace it, and shouldn't it be throwing a code?
I am also smelling the sweet smell of antifreeze, but only when the truck is warming up and the smell is more eveident when the heater is on. Nothing is leaking, and I'm not losing any fluid, but I can still smell it. Is it a hint the heater core is about to leak all over my feet? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Message: For the cat, try putting a bottle of throtle body cleaner through while the engine is running.
Heater core, look at where the hoses attach to the core from the motor and make sure the clamps are tight, if they are loose antifreeze may drip into core area and make that smell. If not prestone makes a good stop leak sealer.

Message: if you are smelling antifreeze, you are losing coolant. may be very little but it has to be leaking somewhere. can you smell it outside the truck as well? i know a lot of 3.9's '00 & up have some t/stat housing gasket leaks. i know mine did. wouldn't leave any fluid on the ground but you could smell it and coolant would get low every week or so.

Message: Thanks, I'll do a search to see where I can put the cleaner through the engine.
I can smell it with the hood open too, I'll check the housing and those hoses. Thanks guys.

Message: You put the cleaner through the throtle body while the truck is running. It comes in an aerosol can and you spray it in. The can has instuctions.

Message: daddio, Unforunately it is a 97 with 82K miles.
spt, I thought you were talking about using some seafoam stuff. I also thought cleaners clogged up the cat if anything.

Message: Been there (recently), done that! Agree w/ pervious posts. Thermostat housing likely culprit. Climb up w/ good flashlight and follow upper radiator hose to thermostat (pipe) housing, and see if you've got a mass of gunk around the base of the thermostat housing, where the gasket is leaking.... Repair; replace thermostat & gasket. that's the easy part....
It's insidious. You'll be leaking coolant, but not finding any on the ground, because it's boiling off the manifold. But your coolant reservoir will be steadily dropping.

Message: Another remote possibility is a leak at the water pump, especially the weep hole. It might boil off there, too, if the leak is small.

Message: Nothing is leaking,
wrong wrong wrong, what you got is a very tiny pin hole that lets just a little bit of coolant mist out and evaporate before you can find it laying in a puddle, your core is leaking dude and it is only gonna get worse.
