Message: Gas mileage will be mid to upper teens, depends on you and where you have to drive. Look for signs of fluid leaks (due to the mileage) and be wary of the little things you might notice when you test drive it. Whoever is selling it to you will fib to you to sell it. "Yes, I always did all my routine maintenance like the owner's manual says to!" This is a lie. Get proof or ignore them when they say it.

Message: I just bought a 97 at 80K, and some items I should have looked at a little closer was the timing chain noise, and the warped rotors. I still would have bought the truck, if I noticed these before but I could have gone a little better deal if I mentioned them.

Message: those trucks are notorious for warped rotors and bad ball joints. check these things before you buy it, also listen for timing chain noise, if you cant do the repair yourself the dealer charges $550. Also, your gas mileage should be in the ballpark of 18-20 on the highway, if its lower you either drive it hard or have a sensor out of whack.

Message: I've got a 99 Dakota w/ auto/V6. It's at 99K miles right now and I still have the original brakes and rotors on it. Maybe I was lucky, or maybe I just don't drive it hard, but to have the original brake pads/shoes and the original rotors is not very common. I have taked very good care of this truck from day 1, so I guess that's got a lot to do with it as well. The only major thing that I've done to it is replace the ball joints (both upper and lower) at 70K. I put moog on it and it drives/handles like a new truck. I little stiff ride, but hey it's a truck...

Message: Front break pads on the '98-'99 Dakotas are notorious, until the third set; it seems the caliper bushings need to set up. Sounds like somebody tightened yours up early. Most of us would go through the first set of front pads in a week and a half, the second set would last a little longer, the third set would last forever. The demise of the first set would catch you by surprise, so you'd eat up your first set of rotors thinking "they can't possibly be going yet!" I'd guess my first set lasted 20k, and I drive like an old lady. The second set lasted 30 k. The third set have been on there nearly 60k. Go figgure!
