Subject: 96 Dakota skipping like crazy and no fix
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 96 dakota with a 3.9 manual trans and about 130,000 miles on. One day about a month ago it began to skip and I figured tune up time.

So here it is what has been replaced:
Plugs (Autolight)
Wires (BOSCH)
Cap
Rotor
Pick up coil
Coil
Air filter
PCV.

I have checked fuel pressure and its a 43lbs. at idle. I have listened to fuel injectors and the are working fine. (clicking when listening with stethatscope).

It will skip a little with the clutch in but under a load especially up a hill it will skip like crazy (gas to floor) with the check engine light blinking at me. When you crest a hill and let off the gas a little it will let out the loudest backfire ever.

I don't know what to change or check now. I am thinking that it is timing chain or distributor. I think think it has jumped timing due to strectch in the chain that most dakotas have. Anyhelp please. I'm running out of money.

Oh yeah the fuel guage flickers once I put about 40 miles on a full tank of gas. If full it will read fine but a little ways down the road it start to flicker.

My guess is on the timing chain and its not that expensive around $150 for the chain sprockets and gaskets and if your mechanically inclined with somewhere to work it can be done easily in a day following the steps of a haynes manual

BUMP anyone else think this is it? I guess it has jumped timing. The timing chains suck in these things. This is my second. Any reccomendations on a new one? Thanks again

you should change that chain regardless of whether you think it has, if you dont have problems with it now from that then you will later. it only cost me about 70 bucks in parts to get the job done and a day in the garage. oh yeah, be smart, dont use the same drain pan for your coolant and tranny cooler lines...then you have to replace coolant too like i did.

You can bring the truck to Autozone and they will check the codes in the computer for free. Maybe it's something simple like an O2 sensor or something... it's worth a shot and doesn't cost anything.

It does sound like some kind of timing issue though, especially if it just started doing it all of a sudden.

I have had it checked out before and I always get system to lean and random multiple cylinder misfire.

How long should a timing chain take to put in?

Any special tools?

I got a service manual at home just trying to get everything ready.

change the chain...at 105k my chain had OVER 1 inch of slack in it. i had to put it to the floor to go 55 and had severe loss in power and it ran like crap. i had to turn the cam back about 5 degrees when i installed the chain because it was not where it belonged. you need a harmonic balancer puller and about 5-6 hours.

i would also change the o2 sensor, i perpetually got a engine running lean code and changed the sensor and all was well. as for the cat being plugged, that would make the truck really doggy, i dont think it would cause a misfire of any kind.

But please take my advice, change the chain...its worth it not to have to worry about it snapping or skipping (more) and ram a piston(s) into a valve(s). that can get expensive.

Yeah you gotta hold it to the floor to get it to do anything. I would say it was the cat but that thing is long gone. :) I got a o2 sensor at one time and it was the wrong harness so I just took it back and didn't change it. I guess I could cut the harness and solder my old one to it. I think it is the timing as I will backfire like hell which kinda says its getting plenty of fuel just no spark. How did yours idle? Did it skip bad or like mine and skip like hell under a load.

Anymore info on the plenium gasket?

Thanks again to all that helped as I am broke as hell right now paying my way through school and starting to run out of options with my goat.

my truck idled fine just a little rough for a while, the oxy sensor made it idle worse then the timing chain. but the chain made the truck so much more responsive and powerful, plus it made my mileage jump from 13 to 18. i really reccommend changing the chain and the oxy sensor. it will be a new truck afterward.

Do a compression test, as it could be a burned intake valve, if not the timing chain stretch. My dad's 455 Pontiac had this problem, compression was 160 in 7 cylinders, 40 in the 8th.
