I have a '98, 4wd, 3.9 with 175,000 mile on it. It's had a problem for over 4 years where after it starts and runs for about a minute, it starts running rough, backfires a few times, then after about another minute, it runs perfectly. I've had it several different shops and no one was ever able to solve it. I just got used to it and would alway let it warm up before taking off. It didn't matter whether the outside temp was -20 or 100 degrees.
Yesterday I backflushed my heater core which successfully restored my heater. For the past few years, it would only put out luke-warm air although my engine heat was always 195 degress. Well, today I've gone for a few rides and each time it starts up perfectly and skips the "running rough" cycle I'm so used to. I can only assume that the flushing helped somehow but can't figure it out as I only flush the core, not the whole system. Anyone have an Idea what happened?

i'm glad you're happy! but flushing the heater core will have nothing to do with the rough running. you must be living right to have a truck that fixes itself! LOL
glad everything is OK for you.

The only thing I can think of that you may have altered that can affect the running condition of the engine is the coolant temperature sensor. Maybe there was some corrosion on it or for whatever reason it was not coming in clean contact with the engine's coolant.

That's what I was thinking but I didn't actually flush the engine...just the core. Didn't know if there was a sensor inside the firewall somewhere. Anyway, it works now.
