Subject: Truck wouldn't start...ABS light now on IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys,
I'm really hoping someone can help me out here. My fiance drives a 97 Dodge Dakota V-6 with ABS. He went to leave today after his lunch break. It is extremely cold outside, in New England, and it took forever to get the truck started. He finally did get it started though. However now the brake warning light is on and the ABS light. He said the brakes feel spongy. He's really not one to be able to know exactly what the issue is. I did a bit of research on the internet and read up that it may be a system failure in the computer and maybe disconnecting the battery and reconnecting will fix it. Is there any truth to this? Any info would be helpful.

Message: Disconnecting the battery rarely ever "corrects" any failure condition. It can only RESET the computer modules on your vehicle. Most likely, the ABS light concern is unrelated to the starting problem unless the battery is becoming weak. The starting problem could be any number of posibilities and so could the ABS light (although the most likely ABS light failure is the rear axle speed sensor, FYI).

Message: I would check for a vacum leak could cause hard starting and prevent the power brake boster from working.

Message: So in other words...this could be pretty much anything? So I guess a price estimate would be out of the picture?

Message: I wouldn't do anything until I got the truck warmed back up to usual temperatures. I'm in CT tonight and it's REAL cold!!!
I've had difficulties such as you describe in very cold weather, and once things warm back up a bit, things are fine.
Once had a rented LeMans on a real cold day (below zero, as I recall) that the pedal went almost all the way to the floor on and of course, I went right thru the first light that I hit (right in front of the hotel). There happened to be a GM dealership right next to the hotel, and I just whipped it in there. The GM dealership got warranty work, I got another rental car, and AVIS wound up with a Lemans with a new master cylinder that didn't really need one. It was just slow-acting because it was so dad-blamed cold!
The Taurus that I have this week didn't want to start this morning (4 attempts, and I've never had that happen on a car with 6K on it - even a Ferd) and it ALSO didn't want to stop when I hit the first light. It's just COLD.
No wonder the Eskimos use dogs!

Message: i had a problem with mine for about a month it was a few things. the first was the rear axle sensor which im sure it will be, the speed sensor also messed up and threw my gauges off. also i had a bad brake light switch and the power to my CPM was bad so i bought a new one, didnt help, had to pintest and fix the wire.
go to a shop or dealer and get them to read the ABS code and it should tell them what they problem is. most of the problems arent that expensive to fix and most u can do yourself. dont do like i did at first and got them to guess what was wrong with it and fix which didnt help, read the code from the computer which tells u exactly what to do and get it fixed. also do a tuneup, make sure battery/alt and all wires are good...if not upgrade them. all of this isnt that expensive and can be done yourself. new alt is 100. battery is 50$, and wires is 10$. spark plug and wires is 30$

Message: THE PROBLEM YOU MENTION IS PROBABLY THE SPEED SENSOR IN THE DIFF. A BAD SPEED SENSOR WILL CAUSE ERATIC STALLING. SPEEDOMETER PROBLEMS, ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED. THIS IS A DEALER PART, SELLS FOR ABOUT $36.00 AND WILL TAKE ABOUT 15 MIN. TO CHANGE.

Message: abs sensor will not give you a trouble code and autozone will check your code for free ----- does anybody do a search on this site ---- why ask the same questions over and over

Message: Thanks for your help. Don't know what the problem is but we had to have it towed to the dealership. The tow truck driver said it looks like it might be leaking from the break line. We are still waiting for a report. Still don't know what caused the stalling either. We are going to try a new battery and see if that helps.
