Subject: Loud operation 2000 V6 2wd

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota V6 2WD that was
running OK until 1 week ago. While highway
driving the engine noise increased. It's kind of
a loud roar.. There were no warning lights,
temp, oil temp, battery were all ok. Pulled off
and noticed noise went away. Noise has not
returned until last PM. All fluids were checked
and were OK, but noise has not gone away.
Called service and they said that a clutch fan
is installed, and that loud operation "happens"
in cold weather (less than 20 degrees F).
There are no unusual noises(knocking,
grinding), no loss of power, no steering
problems or other change in operation of
truck/motor. All belts/hoses appear to be ok.
Nothing appears to be detached. The engine
noise has simply gotten louder. At idle, engine
sound is normal, but noise increases when I
apply gas. Is this engine noise increase due
to colder weather? I bought used w/ 50K miles
in Sept. now have 60K miles with one oil
change in between.
Noise has increased during highway driving
both times, and engine noise/loudness
remains.

Have the same problem, the dealer says nothing is wrong. My does it only on start-ups in warmer weather, it sounds like the engine is going to blow-up sometimes.

I had a 2000 cc 4x2 that did the same thing at 80,000 miles, i took it in a number of times but they always said nothing was wrong with it and nothing could come of it either,i drove it til around 120,000 before selling it but nothing ever happened to it mechanically, all i had to live with is a really loud motor, kinda cool actually sounded like a v8 when you were driving.

Depending on when it does it and how long it lasts, it's perfectly normal... mine does it for about 10-15 seconds when I leave on a cold morning and then doesn't do it anymore.

If it's doing it for prolonged periods, you prolly need to replace your fan clutch. Or use that as a reason to get an electric fan:)
