Subject: 6 cyl enough? IP: Logged
Message: I have an opportunity to purchase a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab sport with anti-spin for a good price and with an extened service plan (major attraction). It is the 3.9 6 cylinder. I do mainly city driving but want to be able to pull a small travel trailer (say 4,000 lbs max) on occasion. Will it do the job? Will I regret the low horses, or is the torque sufficient to pull and cruise on longer trips?
Many thanks.

Message: I've heard the V6 QC daks with the 3.9L are pretty underpowered due to the extra weight of the QC. If it were a CC, it prolly wouldn't be so bad...but I dunno. Honestly, I'd look around a lil more and get one with a bigger engine if you really want the quad cab...or get a newer one with the 3.7L engine.

Message: I have a '98 with the 3.9. I used it to tow my 8000 sailboat/trailer combo from Ft. Lauderdale to Presque Isle,ME. Granted, there are not many hills on I-95 but I was able to travel at 65-70mph without any trouble. I did keep a sharp lookout for the trafic infront of me though as I was more concerned about being able to stop quickly. The only real problem I had was when I got into some stop & start driving while sitting in rush hour traffic on the GW bridge in NY. I have a standard and did smell the clutch smoking a little bit. That was 3 years ago. Last month, I replaced the clutch while putting in a new throwout bearing. The clutch and pressure plate looked esentially like new!
Here's a link to me towing the boat.

Message: i have a '00 QC w/3.9 & 5spd man w/3.55. i take off in 2nd gear most of the time with no trouble & no load. it shouldn't have a prob w/4,000 on fairly level ground but if i was gonna tow frequently and in the hills, i'd go with 3.9 gears. at least a 5 speed manual. i don't think i'd tow anything with a QC 3.9 & auto. my .02

Message: if you plan to pull or even want a little more acceleration i would go for the 8. you wont see that much difference in mileage and resale value is higher. the QC is a heavier truck and needs a little more then the 3.9 has to offer. Find a dakota with either the 5.2 or 4.7 you will be glad you did.

Message: The 3.9 ain't that bad. My dad has 2 gen II V6 4x4 clubcab 5-speeds and they haul and tow on the farm. The '93 regularly pulls farm trailers up to 6000 lbs or so and handles them okay as long as it's not 95 degrees out. Of course he's got a Ram for the bigger stuff.
