Subject: oil build up???
IP: Logged

Message:
I changed my transmission fluid today and I noticed on the inside of the drain bolt, when I took it off, that there was some kind of build up on it. It looked kinda like grease and my dad thought it might have been oil deposited on it. I guess it's building up on the bottom of my transmission pan. Is this a sign of a problem and if so should I do something to get it fixed???

Thanks!!
Malcolm

Did the drain bolt have a magnet on it. If so its put in there to get the fine metal that wears in the trans mission. It usualy looks like greas when you rub it between your fingers. How old is the truck, millage, and how much was in there. I have a 99 with 90,000 on it I just changed it the other day and it had some. But thats normal for a truck like mine.

it's a 98 with 82k. It was about a 1/4" thick. It did look kinda metallic silverish. I guess I should have reached my finger in the drain hole and swabbed some of it out.

It's normal, and it's 'clutch mud' from normal wear in the tranny.

What tranny has a drain bolt? All the ones I've seen require you to drop the pan and take a bath in it.

It's a manual transmission if I didn't state that before. And I don't remember there being a separate magnet from the bolt. I guess the end of the bolt may be magnetized? Also the way the transmission looks I don't think you can drop the pan off the bottom. I was just wondering if that build up may mean I need to get it flushed out...?
