If it is your Ball Joints, on the 2000-2003 Durango's and Dakota's that we not recalled (4x2) they extended the warranty to a 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty. Now good luck getting them to admit that they need to be changed if they do. You might want to take it to an independent repair shop (maybe a few places), have them checked and then take it to dodge and tell them your findings. I have found that they won't repair anything unless you force them to, they always say "cannot duplicate customer complaint" or say it's something small and fix that. But just wanted to let you know about the extended warranty.

Has anybody replaced ball joints themself? I have a 98 with a V6 and 115,000 miles and I don't think the dodge dealer in town will work with me. What does the repair usually cost and how hard is it to do?
Thanks

Chris,
I've changed ball joints before but not in a dodge dakota...I changed them in my 95' Olds Cutlass Supreme that i had before my truck...It wasn't that difficult but i worked at a dealership and i had access to a lift and every tool imaginable...but all i used was a hammer and some pliers and some wrenches... I'm not sure on the difficulty for dodges or trucks.

You have the wrong Dodge dealership. Find another dealer.

Yeah i know what ur saying with bad dodge dealerships..

We have 3 of them and all 3 are 5 star dealerships none fix anything on my truck.
At one point i had no brakes, they wouldnt fix them until i threatened them and one just plan got nasty with me. Then everyone of them tryed to drop my warrenty on me and sayed i abused it.
I even called lithia and told them about what happened they sayed ur problem... BTW brake problem was a leaky vaccuum booster.

My dakota has cost me $2500.00 worth of repairs due to dealerships not repairing stuff and it goes down far away from any dealership.Plus the fact of me taking it in for weeks on end to have nothing fixed.

Hopefully u all will have better luck with ur dealerships!!!

Doesn't seem like I'm the only person. Have a few dealers around me. Bought my Dakota from one and took it in for service not long after (for repairs they knew about and said they would cover). I was told that the few hundred rpm change in the idle was because it was a rough engine, not because it need plugs and wires. Weird that plugs and wires helped it. Then the belt had to be changed because of all the cracks in it, after they said it "needs to be changed immediatly). Well i was told that the belt was fine, then the belt just had normal wear, then that it was not covered. Dodge Service departments need to become lawyers because they go around the subject so well. We have even had a dealer tell us that we will "just have to live" with a squeek, (on a vehicle that is expensive I might add). The weird part about being a Dodge fan. I take my can to our local Ford Dealer for repairs. The Dodge dealers are SO BAD, that i was driven to Ford where we were tread great and have never been lied to once (knock on wood). Sorry to get off topic there......

I guess I'm lucky...I come from a small town with 3 places that can do it and My fiance has 2 uncles that own their own body shops so they could do it too...They're not a dodge dealer ship but they can do it for pretty cheapand a good job of it...but i don't like other people working on my truck...If i can do it myself i will do it no matter how hard it is or how long it will take me because i like to see everything that is being done with my vehicle...Now if it's like an electrical problem that i can't fix or deal with then i will have no choice.

I have a 99 4X4 i just replaced all 4 ball joints on mine. The uper to are riveted in you have to drill the 3 rivets, the new ball joints come with bolts to replace the rivets. The lower ball joints are presed in and have locking tabs the you have to grind off. If you have a porta power you can press them out while on the truck. Makes it much eazer. The new ones are presed in and have a snap ring to lock them in.
