Subject: Transmission - Larry?

I'm gonna have my dad take my truck in to a shop sometime this week and if they come back with the solution: Your transmission is shot and we need to rebuild it I'd like a few suggestions on what may solve it for MUCH cheaper.

So here's the symptoms I'm gonna be having him report to them.

1.) Leaks (simple fix...stripped bolt, just needs retapped)
2.) Overrevs between 1st and 2nd gear on colder days until it's had a chance to shift a few times and then it's fine.
3.) Sometimes it doesn't like to downshift when I mash it and suddenly it'll surge real hard, downshift, then acts confused and upshifts again.
4.) This is a new one since I lost traction on a curve and spun a 180 at 50mph...I'm wondering if it isn't the torque converter...anyway, at higher speeds now (interstate speeds and up) it'll start surging. For example a friend and I were both hauling ass down a backroad one day and when I got up to around 85mph you could feel it pull, quit pulling, pull, quit pulling, etc. It wasn't really bucking, but you could definitely notice it wasn't constantly pulling like it should be and you could hear the engine changing in sound.

Any ideas? I'm guessing it could be one of the two main sensors/solenoids, bands needing adjusted, or something else? I'm also gonna see if he can have a shift kit installed at the same time...possibly. Depends on how much work will need to be done.

Also, I'm still clueless about my problem with the engine missing after a warm restart, usually after stopping for gas. I ran some fuel injector cleaner through the engine and it went away for a about 2 weeks, but it does it every once in awhile now. It also has started doing it when I'm sitting at a redlight at idle...i'll just feel it miss lightly every few seconds. Sound like fuel injectors to you? Maybe it's time for some FMS injectors...lol. I changed my coil thinking that would be it, but that didn't solve a thing.

Josh,
How long has it been since you have had a fluid and filter change? I bet this plus band adjustment and upgraded preesure/regulator selonoid would definity help. My 92 4x4 started to develop a problem this past summer, the fluid, filter change and band adjustment helped.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Well...the leak developed when a bolt stripped after doing a fluid/filter change. lol. Been prolly 500 miles ago. Still acts up. I'm hoping they'll be willing to flush it for me so I can get a completely fluid change. My truck's only got 58,000 on it so it's still good to go.

I just read a post and the owner found the Cat converter was clogged. My brother had a bad Cat too that would shut his engine down and make the tranny bump. Here is a few link to research your problem.

http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html
and

www.alldata.com
Find the TSB link and load your make and model, If you see a hint that this is a historical probelm you can sign up for $20.00 for a full years and get a full read of the TSB's for your truck.

Quick question for anyone... my tranny fluid is running low now I'm sure. Is it safe for me to go and buy like Quaker State's ATF +3 fluid or Mercon 5 to top off my current ATF +4 so I can drive it til I can take it in to the shop? I'm figuring yes since I've heard both of those can be used in the Dakotas without much trouble and it'd TECHNICALLY be mixed if I did a fluid change and changed fluids since not flushing the torque converter doesn't completely drain the old fluid... But I wanna play it safe so I'd like another opinion.

Use the ATF+3 no dexron or mercon.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Thanks Wadak... I knew Dexron was bad stuff, but wasn't sure on the Mercon.
