My Truck is a 1996 Dodge Dakota 3.9 and here is my Problem.
The Transmission is acting Funny as it can not make up it's mind what it want's to do.
it wil wind out and I have to let off of the Gas to get it to Change. (Sometime's it will change on it own) Then If I press on the Gas it will downshift and sound's like it is Bogging down.
I did a Search for my Problem and I am coming up with a Lot of Topic's about it could be my
Throttle Position Sensor
Well I went to Autozone to Get it (Computer) Scanned and There was nothing showing up on the Scanner. Just like it was not powering up (Scanner) So the Clerk hooked it up to Their service Truck and the Scanner was working fine. Hooked it back up to my Dakota and Nothing.
He said that It looked like I had something unpluged. I have went over the entire truck with a fine tooth comb But! The only thing that I can find that Is unpluged is a 3 Prong (Inline) thingy sticking out right beside where you hook up the Scanner. But! I can find nothing that it plug's into. I checked it with my VOM and it is a Hot plug in. I do not belive the Computer is Bad Because the Truck is running like a Fine tuned sewing machine. Just won't shift gear's propley. Any help on why the scanner would not show anything?
Thank's

How many miles on your truck?

1. Start with a transmission filter and fluid change, dont use that dexron crap in Dakota Transmission A500RE tranny. Use Chrysler atf+3 or atf+4 or even better Amsoil universal trasnmission fluid.

2. Another possilbility in line temp sensor to sense tranny fluid warm up before shifting.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Check the elect connections on the trans and the
grounds first

Main back of motor to fire wall
Eng ground comp behind alt

These trans were also known for having bad presure
sensor and sol around $200 for upgraded replacement

Have a line presure test done on trans
Idle in gear 50 to 70 PSI
As soon as you touch the gas 90 to 100 PSI

It may be the comp but that is very rare

Ok!
Serviced Transmission W/Filter and Mercon V Fluid.
Replaced the
Throttle Position Sensor ($35.00 Wow!)
A Little help But! Not much else.
Had to let off of Accel. To get it to shift then If I press on the Gas It sound's Like it is boggig down.
Can Y'all think of anything else.
I saw a Couple more sensor's (what looked like) around the valve body when I had the Pan off. all the connector's were tight. Is there a Shift Kit that I can put in the Tranny and bypass all the Electronic's?
If so where do I get one and can I install it without pulling the Tranny?
Thank's
Emory

sounds like your lockup valve is sticking or
shorted connections on trans plug check drivers
side, stuck sol not venting the fluid as it should
sonnax makes a replacement change valve if is that
or replace the sol pac

trying to lockup in 1 2 and 3 is only supose to
lockup when in O/D

You have the wrong fluid in there also

TCI Trans-Scat 220500 shift kit all you need to do
is drop the valve body out but you should get it
working right first the shift kit will not solve
the probs you are describing

Thank you for the Input.
J.J.
Could you elaborate a Little more.
(1) Wrong Fluid
I know that it Has (2) sensors at the Valve Body.
But! Where is the Lockup valve located?
Would it Take a Mastermind to install the
TCI Trans-Scat 220500 shift kit?
Would a Bad Cat. Converter cause any of those problem's.
Because I belive it to be Bad.
I also have the "Dragging Can's" sound.
Can I just take it out and Replace with a Piece Of Pipe?.
We do not have all those Emmission Law's here in South Georgia.
I have checked the TV Cable and it seem's to be right with the Throttle Cable.
Thank you for all of your Help.
BTW!
I got the problem cured about the Computer not reading thru the Scanner.
It was just like Y'all described it was a Bad Ground from the Firewall to the rear of the Engine.

Update,
Ok! Gang
Here is the Status On my Dakota and the Transmission that could not make up it's mind of what it wanted to do.
I took the Cat. Converter off of the Truck and there was a Piece of the Honey comb Lodged into the Tail Pipe. (This is no Joke it is the trurh)
anyway I did away with the Cat Converter and just Installed a Piece of Pipe.
Now the Truck run's fine and The Tranny shift's just great.
Now I am a Happy Camper again.
Thank's for all the Help!!

Well here is a Bad Dodge Transmission web site at the bottom of this post, you might want to save in your favorites.

If you dont have a problem now you will soon enough. My brother paid the Dodge dealership $800.00 to replave a $50.00 solenoid that only required the oil pan removal. Another good web site is www.Alldata.com you can see if there is a TSB posted for your make and model but you will need to pay $20.00 for a subscription to get a download of the repair procedure.
