My 99 Dakota with a 3.9 and a stick started to surge on me in the last few weeks. It usually happens when I have driven about 10 miles or so. When I let off the gas, I can watch the tach needle bounce down about 250 rpms or so and then the truck will shake like it is running out of fuel. Usually this problems pass after a minute or so, but I had it very bad once for 15 minutes or so. The truck needs to be dropped down to usually 3rd or 4th gear to continue on.

I check the codes with a OBD2 reader and found P1391 which is an intermitant cam or crank sensor. Since this 3.9's cam sensor is really the distributor pick up coil, I figured I would change that first. I also put new plugs, cap, rotor and wires in too. I thought I had the problem solved, but then it started doing it briefly 2 weeks later. I ran another scan and the P1391 was in the computer again, but I'm not sure if I cleared it from before.

I called three Chrysler dealers in the area and explained it to them. Some felt I should put in a crank sensor and others thought the distributor had slop in the gear. I pulled the distributor cap off tonight and seen I had about an 1/8" or so movement at the tip of the rotor, but I don't know if this is excessive.

Would a distributor or crank sensor show up when I pull my foot off of the gas (or is this a sloppy timing chain issue). Does anyone have any advice for this one. I hate to keep throwing $$$ at it.

So would you think the crank sensor is the next thing to change since I did the cam sensor already?

I have a similar problem with my 99 Dakota 4x4, 5spd V6. Ran fine all summer but as soon as the temperature dropped below 50 it began doing the following: Runs fine for 1 to 10 minutes (depending on the outside temperature) Then runs rough like Steve's for 5 to 20 minutes (again, depending on the temperature) then runs fine. It seems to be related to whatever functions like a Choke. You can smell the raw gas when it is bucking. The local dodge dealer looked at it and recommended a crank position sensor or oxygen sensors. I replaced the Oxygen sensors and the air temperature sensor, no change. It won't start when I unplug the crank position sensor so that doesn't seem to be defective. I think you get the Crank sensor code because the engine is missing not because it is bad but I could be wrong. The plugs, wires, cap, and coil were replaced by a dodge dealer last summer. I was on vacation and didn't want to fool with it. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a '99 V6 4x4 with 118K miles. I have the same problem. Drive for 3 miles until it starts to warm up, then it hessitates and coughs for about 2 miles, then it fully warms up and runs OK. I can hear a loud sucking sound from the engine at 2500 to 3000 RPM which it never did before. Sensors up top check out OK according to Haynes manual. Will put real-time OBD2 / PC analyzer on it as soon as I figure out which one to buy.

Crankshaft position sensors aren't uncommon failures on the 3.9/5.2 engines. I would try one if it's not too expensive. Your symptoms can also mean that an O2 sensor is failing (switching incorrectly), but since you didn't mention that in the codes you pulled, I would doubt it. That's my guess from my experience, JasonB covered just about every possibility I can think of and a few more too! :-)

Wiring can also be suspected, especially if the truck sits outside. Rodents can chew wires, terminals can get coroded- things can get pretty ugly if you're in a wooded area, or a more rural area anyway.

I rather think that your truck won't start if the crank position sensor is disconnected. Disconnection wouldn't eliminate failure. Of course it's also possible again that you're chasing a wireing problem.

Anyway good luck.

The problem was the Crank Position Sensor. Replaced it and the engine runs fine. Go Figure! This Dodge with 134,000 miles is a piece of junk compared to my Oldsmobile Silhouette van which hasn't given me any engine problems after 161,000 miles (replaced the water pump but I consider that normal).

I replaced the Crank Position Sensor and the problem went away. The end of my old sensor was rusty. Probably because the grommet was missing.
Parts cost about $90 for sensor, $4.30 for grommet, $3.00 for 12 new fasteners to hold the inner wheel well liner. Sensor cost about same at dealer and the discount parts stores.

I had the same problem just about 2 months ago...bucking like running out of fuel...if I shut her down and started her up again she ran fine for a mile then she'd start bucking again...I replaced plugs, cap, rotor...thinking it was electrical..no change...I checked fuel press...that too was fine...I added fuel system cleaner...no change...running out of options I took her to a friend and he found a sticking AIS motor and a 'lazy' upstream O2 sensor...replaced those two and she's runnin fine since
