Message: my '99 3.9 dakota is due for a trans. service. my aod had the older type 7176 atf fluid in it and i do believe the new atf+4 supersedes the 7176 and the atf+3. the local transmission wanted to use mercon/dexron3 with a lubegaurd additive in it to "bring it up to atf+4" level's. they claim they've been doing this for years with no problems. anyone ever hear of this before? i really feel atf+4 is by far the better choice. thanks in advance fellas!

Message: This is the same thing they do with Mercon V. They add that little bottle and tell you it is the same. One is synthetic and one isn't. An additive won't change that, it is only a friction modifier. It probably does last as long as most people own their vehicles after that. Driving characteristics are slighty different. I asked a question about the difference between ATF+3 and Mercon V thinking there might be some of Bob's oil guys here. All I got was nasty people that I'm not even sure could find their transmission. Interesting that these people think these fluids are wildly different and yet they will put the same Amsoil in a Ford and DC product without a thought.

Message: Yes you can add lubegard black to dextron to bring
it upto +4 specs and it does work
Chrysler recomends +4 even if your manual says +3
In my shop we use 3 fluids in the mopar trans
Chrysler atf+4
Amsoil universal syn
Red line syn
Nothing else is ever put into the newer mopar
transmissions and we never have any complaints
We have also used the lubegard black when a
customer got the wrong fluid put in and is
complaining of slippage and eratic shifts cheaper
than a new filter and change for the customer
