This is just some words of wisdom to 3.9 v-6 owners. Do not waste your money on mods. I did all the basic bolt on crap 48MM F&B TB, 1.7RR, Magnaflow exhaust, TPS mod,Volant intake, IAT relocate, Superchips etc. These are all a colossal waste of $$$$$$$$$. Try them if you must but, you will eventually have to admit most any vehicle bar none can wax this pile of KRUD engine. Go ahead race a Tercel you'll lose! This engine lacks the basic architecture to have any truly meaningful gains with bolt ons. You will see minimal gains with any combo of these mods. I dyno'd, not so great and, most of all seat of pants tests were even weaker. The sooner you accept you bought a heavy truck with a pathetically underpowered engine, the happier you will be. That motor is a huge piece of s_ _ t! You can make any engine fast its just that this one would require a big buck teardown/perf rebuild. Get a v-8 any v-8 you will have a far better starting point!!!!

ps. any perf exhaust on a pushrod v-6 sounds like a goat in heat ok maybe some of you inbred jeds go for that biz!

Im sorry you didnt like you truck. But opinions vary. Maybe you should try some emotional management there you sound a little distressed about the state of your car. Next time may i suggest a little more research before puruseing such a life altering purchase if a car means this much to you. G'day sir!

yes it is just a truck and i regret not researching more. that said I sold the 2001 dakota and would not recommend a 3.9 for any application. it is a useless engine for any application in a vehicle that size. 3.7 sounds a way lot better and the 4.7 makes it feel like an entirely different machine.

Just think, Chris, how impressed with the v6 you would have been had you started with a four cylinder.

Next time you race, don't race a Tercel, race an M1 tank. It has tremdous horsepower, but you will beat it every time.

Chris..Chris..Chris....Youre an idiot,Ive owned several Toyotas with the 22r,which are very reliable,& I own two (2) Dakotas,a '94 V6 5 speed..which has kicked much ass,& an'02 Dakota V6 automatic, these engines are enough to beat a Camaro V6,an S-10 V6...yes the 4.3 & countless other vehicles, sounds like the problem isnt the motor OR the vehicle..Sounds like the problem is the loose nut behind the wheel....What Im saying is that YOU cant drive.
These motors are reliable & will get the job done IF you know what youre doing,Go back to school Chrissy.

I wrote this post for my own entertainment. You fools and your fantasy bench racing. You simply proved my point in spades. You are the "idiots" who race a v6 p/u truck. Those things are garbage and always will be I had a good laugh geeks!!

I would have to agree with Chris. These motors are under powered dogs, and the gas milg. we won't even go there. I have had V-8's that get bettere gas milg. I have a 95 4x4 Auto.,and I wouldn't consider racing anyone. You guy's are dreaming if you think you can race and, beat anyone with a V-6 Dak. Other than the motor, this is a wonderful truck. Next though,I'll buy a V-8 that i won't have to do any upgrades to.

Well you obviously havn't supercharged it yet. http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/v6super.html All the money you wasted on air intakes, chips, exhaust, etc... could of gone towards a nice blower. And if you wanted to get crazym you could add some nitrous. I would put forged pistons in it though if I added both. Bottom line is forced induction is the best power adder and will make any v6 go like a bastard.

I really cant understand what these cry babies have against the dak v6's.
Did you not test drive the truck before you bought it?
You do realize it's a truck and not a jap tuner car....right?
I will agree the 3.9 is not much of a motor, but its relatively reliable and has plenty of power to move these trucks. The 3.9 is based on a V8 first introduced in 1967....so what did you think you were getting?

you made your bed, now.....drive it or sell it to someone who can appreciate it.

So I have the v6 in my 97....I wish I had a v8 and will prolly swap for a 360 when this 3.9 dies, but-

I have 33" tires and 3.92 gears with an automatic. I have to say my truck has plenty of power for being a v6. I do have trouble pulling a car, but that is to be expected. The gas mileage is not great, but with 33's it does everything I would expect it to do. Off-road it goes nicely, outdoes many jeeps that are lifted. I am in college and can not afford the swap now, so I get along with what I have. Exhaust, intake, and a few other pep ups have helped it out alot.

Bottom line, I will NOT pay $30K for a new one with the v8, I am sticking the money into this truck and saving a ton in the process. I have a huge problem with the fact that the dakota is near the same price as a diesel ram. What is Chrysler thinking?

Anyway, keep knocking the v6, makes us owners feel great!

I drove an '03 3.9 and an '04 3.7 before buying. The 3.9 has more seat of your pants torque, but the 3.7 truck was clearly quicker. I bought the newer truck. The 3.7 in the dak does not like to rev (heavy flywheel? in my 5 spd). So,....... this is no sports car........ my buddy in his 5.0 bronco could not catch me. I am satified. 210 hp 235 ft-lbs from a v-6. Kick ass. (period)

The 3.9 is a really reliable engine, my 93 V6 at 135,000 miles is going as strong if not stronger then the day it was bought and it has put up with some good poundings too. I know countless people with V6 dakotas with well over 200k on them. I agree..it can be a little doggy at times, but my 3:55 gears and ext cab doesnt help. This motor derives off the 318 so pretty much you are saying that motor is junk too. They dont use 318's & 360 in derby cars for nothing! Wake up and smell the coffee

Well thanks for your input chris...as you can tell nobody here really gives a fuŠk and could care less if you don't like the v-6's...and i agree it all depends on who the driver is...you can have someone behind a wheel drag someone and lose and then trade drivers with someone who knows what they're doin and then win...it just seems like either you suck at getting good quality mods or you just suck period but who knows...:dunno:

Hey Chris,

Im 18, and since I'm heading off to college, I was presented with the option of getting any new car for a resaonable price. Guess waht I did?

I kept my 2000 3.9 V6 Dakota. Yup.....I love it. Everyone believes it's brand new, and also a V8. I spend time making my car look clean and run well. It's absolutely perfect. If I wanted to race a truck I'd buy an S-10 and reweld the frame to hold a big block.....The V6 Isn't the best engine, but who cares? I don't race on my way to school and work. Of course, i gun it sometimes to hear the exhaust.

Anyways....Where did the money go? I saved it. One day I'll buy a brand new Dakota, or a new engine, and till then i'm throwing it all into stocks so I can retire at 25, HAHAHA.

Chris...Im sorry you're unhappy, but please hold your comments, which no one wants to hear, to yourself.

Later Folks,
Alec
