Subject: 99 dakota trans problems IP: Logged
Message: has anyone experienced trans issues on their 99 dakotas? mine has 43K and its nuts that it has trans trouble already. its seems when it warms up then its ok. when i 1st start it it sometimes bangs into reverse and then when i drive it takes a HIGH 3+ RPM before it shifts. i took it to Cottman and the guy said it could be something with seals or gaskets that expand and contract and may be going bad.
he said they charge about 325$ to just pull trans out to look at whats going on. then depending on the part or parts from low to high end could cost 1500+.
anyone know if dodge has anything as far as warranty or free repairs for trans work?
any ideas?

Message: Could be something as simple as low fluid level due to small leak. Check the trans fluid level while warmed up and idling in neutral (as prescribed on the dipstick). If it is low, inspect for leaks, top it off as needed and get the leaks repaired. If it is not low, consider having your routine fluid/filter service with band adjustments, as recommended by schedule "B" of your maintenance recommendations (12,000 miles for 1999, I think). Sometimes that can help with some minor issues. If all else fails, have it diagnosed by a competent professional. A teardown is most likely NOT required to diagnose your concern.
Good luck on getting any warranty assistance on a 1999 for anything. You are WAAAAAYYYYYY out of warranty.

Message: Had the same issue with my 02 and almost the same milage. After talking to some people I went to a place called tuffy's that did a flush (not just a drain), replaced the cheap mopar ATF with a synthetic and also put a new filter in. Tranny runs like new now. It cost me $250, but it was worth it not to fry the trans up. The flush according to them got 94% of old fluid out. They said just draining it only got 40% out. Could be all lies, but it does run good now.

Message: A flush can be very beneficial (94% fluid replacement is fairly accurate if I remember right) to any transmission, but should never be used exclusively for maintaining most transmissions. The 1999 Dakota transmission should also have the bands adjusted and the filter replaced. The newer transmission have 2 filters that should be routinely replaced and a flush alone can not accomodate that.
The newer fluid, ATF+4, is a premium fluid and is definately much better than previously used fluids for DC vehicles' transmissions. It was never intended to rival or compete with synthetic fluids, which can be even more beneficial than ANY non-synthetic fluid. Many, not all, synthetic fluids are better lubricants, this has never been a secret.
