Subject: Deer Whistles? IP: Logged
Message: I hit a deer a couple weeks ago and my truck is going into the body shop monday. I hit the deer with the LF corner and busted my grill, headlamp, 1 clear marker lamp(almost new) bent hood, bent fender, pushed in bumper, fog lamps not working. total damage=2000$cnd. picked up the deer meat from the butcher last night, mmmmm good meat.
I was wondering if any knows how well deer whistles work and whats the best kind. air whistles or electric?
LilRed01

Message: I know plenty of people that use the cheap ones from wal-mart. They do make a nice whistle sound while driving. I've never used them, have not had a need. My truck is loud enough for deer to hear :D I've seen many a deer stop at the roadside and then see them cross over in the rear view.
winter time is prefect time for some deer chili! Enjoy!

Message: hey, some people hunt like that;-). seriously though, i think they only work to a certain extent. i had a friend hit a deer with them on his truck too. not sure exactly how he managed to do it, it was kinda wierd, but he still hit one. still worth the few dollars in my opinion though.

Message: I don't think they work at all, deer have very keen hearing and could here almost anything coming, a simple wistle wont make a deer run the other way. I have whistled b4 to stop a deer after being spooked, why do they stop? They are curious creatures and often stop to check things out. Best thing a person can do, ask someone who knows your areas ruting(mating) season, this is a peak time for deer travel. Always keep a look out for deer on backroads and highways alike, if your paying attention allot of deer can be avoided.

Message: Yeah I've been driving back roads all my life this is the first I've hit. I did have two others on different occasions run into the side of my old '89 Dodge aries.
I guess I'll try and pair and if I end up with more meat in the freezer then I'll take em off.
The rest of the story is as I came over this little crest in the road I saw a guy backing up the road I began so slow down to go around him but as I was watching him the deer jumped out and wham. Turned out that he had seen the deer and was backing up to get a look at it.

Message: Dan M,
I had a theory that deer were scared to cross in front of me with my Flowmaster muffler on my dak...I figured since it sets off car alarms, it'd surely keep deer away. Seemed to work for a while or so I thought. One night I was out real late driving around to clear my head and I saw two deer pop their heads up from out in a field to my right. They had no problem taking off in front of me to get back into the woods on my left. Had I not been paying attention to my surroundings, I'd have hit em. So...be careful with that theory:)

Message: I live in Rural Utah, Lots of deer. It seems that when they are in the road, if you turn of your lights, they will not be blinded and mesmorized by them, and your exhaust will scare them away. Works for me every time. Just make sure you can see in the dark!

Message: I have no experience with them, but I support what sean98dak said about the lights. I hit a deer when in high school. My dad was ticked off, since it was the family car, but mom chilled him out and they realized they had never told me about those type of hazards. So I got the lecture, which makes sense for ANY nocturnal animal.
I don't know how factual it is, but the following is what I was told, and it seems to make sense from my experiences. Usually, when a nocturnal animal is startled, they look at the source of the noise and, while we are driving, their night vision is ruined by our headlights. Instinct kicks in and they return the way they had come, because they remember that route, or they run in front of us as they are using our headlights to see. So I was told to slow down as much as possible when seeing the animals and to turn the headlights off, using running/parking lights only. This only temporarily blinds them and they are less likely to jump in front of you.
Take it for what its worth. I hit one deer and a bird before learning this tip. I've come close to 2 deer, an elk, 3 coyote, a variety of rabbits and other miscellaneous animals since, and thankfully have no more repair bills to show for it. As for the whistles, I have never used them, so I have no opinion about them.

Message: Deer are most active at night, but they come out during the day too...not sure if they're technically considered noctural or not. My friend's grandpa owns a bunch of land and raises deer (wild and captive born/bred) on it so we work with them quite a bit.
They are usually out during the day walking around in the woods, but that's also when you'll find them laying around in the weeds trying to sleep...around dusk, they'll begin to make their way out to the fields to graze and whatever else they do.
Turning off your lights makes sense...although deer aren't exactly real smart anyway...or at the very least they're stubborn. We had to herd a couple into a new pen during the day and we use gators to do it. We were chasing one all around the pond trying to get it to go into the pen. It started running towards the open gate but didn't wanna go that direction...instead it ran alongside us while we had the horn blaring and instead of turning right into the pen it went straight into the fence. We slammed on the brakes to miss the fence and block it and FINALLY after coming to its senses it turned around and ran into the pen. Crazy deer...
Although we got cool stories too... my friend was sitting on a bag of feed to avoid getting the gator seat dirty from his greasy clothes and the bag ripped. Deer were walking alongside the gator and kept sticking their heads in and pushing my friend's feet off the pedals. He got out to run the deer off and one of the younger ones turned around and blasted him with it's hind leg. They also were raising a baby, hand-feeding him and everything... it was so funny. This deer was like a pet dog. You walk into the pen and it'd walk up and start licking your face and head. You could walk out into the pen with a big treat and he'd jump up and down like a dog trying to get it. Great times...
Sorry for rambling...just brings back the good ole memories of warm weather. lol

Message: I agree with the turning off your lights theory if you have time, but on the other hand if I have time to turn off my lights then I have time to stop or get out of the way. Seems to me that this way would only mean I don't see what I hit of how close I came to hitting it.

Message: Those who have them and have not hit a deer swear by them. Those that have them and have hit a deer swear against them. My opinion?? They are like the mood rings. If you believe in them so be it.
By the way, I am recovering from hitting a deer while not using deer whistles. I was running straight pipes on a '99 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The loud pipes don't even work!!

Message: A lot of the Canadian government vehicles had them on and they took them all off because they found the deer would become confused and be likely to stand there in the middle of the road or jump into the road.
Loud mufflers don't scare deer either, my buddy's truck was extremely loud, I don't know what he had on it but it was louder than flowmaster 40's at full throttle; yeah, he hit a deer on the way to work one night on the highway.

Message: i bought my truck used and it came with them on. i dont know if they work or not but i just leave them on anyway. actually i have not seen a deer yet. i really havent seen anything except a possum that was running off the road into the woods. i guess its a good thing i havent seen anything. i agree with lilred01 about the headlights. i would rather slow down and/or swerve out of the way then to turn off my headlights and not see much of anything.

Message: Horn does work if you have time for it. I hit a little one in a rented Sport trac... a little smaller than a great dane; it came from the side at such a sharp angle and so fast I didn't see it until it was in the middle of the opposite lane, then it was under my left side wheels.

Message: Horn doesn't work either it only results in the deer getting even more confused. I've stoped behind people and seen them honk the horn then the deer ran in a circle then straight into the the front of the car in front of me which had already stoped.
The bottom line is that nothing really seems to works.

Message: Ive been raised around cattle and seen a lot of what can go on.
The light does blind them. We use bright light to work with cows at night during calving season due to that reason.
Lots of noise and loud noise confuses them and makes them more likely to act stupid, wild and run into things/through things. Same with lots of motion an fast movement.
A vehicle has almost all of that going on.
