Message: I recently took a trip of about 400 miles and put 17 gallons in the tank, yet only went 160 miles on that fillup :(
It was sputtering around so im hoping its bad gas, water in tank.
I have a horrible exaust situation so the O2 sensor and cad converter wouldn't be the main problem would it? and do the sensors come with a new cad or are they not attached to it.

Message: Sounds like either bad gas or an 02 sensor...
Could also be a plugged cat or even something else...but I'm leaning towards 02 sensor.
02 isn't attached to the cat I don't believe. When you replace it, you're replacing only the sensor. No need to touch the cat unless it's bad.

I would have to agree with GB2000 that it could be plug cat and/or the O2 sensor. Contrary to what Garwood has posted, there are vehicles who's mileage will drop to very low numbers case and point 87 dodge dakota carbureted. Maybe the newer obd-2 are not as bad as the older obd-1.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

The exhaust causes much heat as the manifold bolts are non existant. (posted in different thread)
that causes heat which in turn can do multiple things.
The check engine light would come on if it was the 02 so it is not that. Now im leaning to the valves or fuel pump/ fuel filter.

Well, that shows you how useless those studies are. When my O2 sensor failed in my car, my gas mileage went from 34 mpg to 21. Right after replacement it was back to 34. My dad's O2 sensor failure took him from 30 mpg to 13; back to normal when replaced.

Message: replace the O2 sensor, use an oem replacement, not a cheapie imitation. it may also be time for a hard tune-up. let us know. i don't put much faith in "studies" such as the afore mentioned colorado state university one. they're just not realistic.

Message: so where exactly does the o2 go?
first we are going to start with the exhaust manifold because if thats messed up then it could cause the cadconv to be messed up.
