Subject: 01'Dak, best oil & filter? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001, 3.9 v6,157k miles, having the oil pump changed with a new Melling pump, screen cleaned, new oil pan gasket, new Purolator filter, with 20/50 Valvoline oil put back in, for $250. Is that a fair price just for the labor, and is that good oil to put back in with this many miles? The engine does not burn oil and does not leak oil. It is so gunked up with sludge from me not changing it EVERY 3000 miles, that the oil pressure guage drops to zero every time i get in it. It has also been making a knocking noise underneath, like main rods, and after 30 or 40 miles of driving, a ticking of the lifters.I drive the truck at least 120 miles a day to work and back with tools and materials on board. I just need to know the best oil/& weight and filter to use on this vehicle.

Message: Oil is oil, some just have other extra added in products. I have always tried to run valvoline and a purolator filter. It worked with out a problem in my Concord and work fine in my Dakota. If you had a sludge problem you might want to change it every 3k miles, not 7500 miles like the owners manual says. You may want to invst in synthic since it has a easier time getting around your enging and lasts a bit longer.

Message: 1988 Dakota with almost 200,000 miles. Used castrol oil 10/30 and fram filters since new. Still going stong with no motor problems. Still have the original timing chain in. I do change oil every 2500 to 3000 miles.

Message: i work for penzoil, its better not to run the synthetics in a vehicle with higher mileage. your better off using a high mileage motor oil and changing it almost every 3000, alittle over is fine, also, try using the slick 50 oil additive, ive seen it clear up the ticking in quite a few vehicles

Message: I have 2 Dakotas a 1994 V6 w/263,000 miles on it & a 2002 with a V6 25,000 miles on it.The '94 is a manual shift, the '02 is an automatic. I have always used Pennzoil 10W-40 in the '94 so thats what I put in the '02.I used to run a Fram oil filter but have since switched over to a Wix (for an '88 318,Thx Larry).
Also,I live in Mississippi so its not THAT cold here, unless you count this past week,we have a few inches of ice on the ground.
And for what its worth I always change my oil right at or just before 3000 miles,& I use STP oil treatment everytime always have, always will.
Happy New Year
