Message: Greetings DKota owners,
I own a dakota 89' 3.9 4x4 with 165000.0 miles. I am the second owner of this vehicle for the last 80000.0 miles or so. I am more or less happy w/ my PU even though it is kinda slow.
On point, what I am unhappy about is the lack of info. I have found about maintenance and repair for my truck; specifically, the vagueness used in my chiltons repair manual.
I am trying to replace the fuel filter but can't figure out how to relieve the fuel pressure. I mean, I get to the step where it asks me to 'connect a jumper wire between ground terminal No.1 of the injector harness and the engine ground.,' but gives no help as to a electrical diagram of the injector harness?
I looked at the harness and found four wires total: the two outermost wires are the color green and the two inside wires are vanilla and beige. Now figuring this, green is typically ground . . . but do I want to risk it. So I can't verify nor do I have $1000 to repair some blown sensor. What can I do? Where can I buy a technical repair manual? Answers, anybody?
Thanks in advance,
-Windex

Years ago when I had to replace the fuel filter on my old (chevy) truck, I relieved the fuel pressure by pulling the fuse for the fuel pump and then starting it up. If I remember correctly, it should stall out pretty quickly, if it starts at all. Anyhow, this should do the trick of getting the pressure out of the line.
I think that I also had a pencil with me to quick shove in the fuel line when I disconnected it, to keep gas from running all over the place until I could get a pail under it.
Hope this helps.
BTW, I got my Factory Service Manual for $45 off of ebay. It took a couple of months though (btwn waiting for an item to come up for bid, bidding, losing bid, trying again...). If you're going to be keeping the truck for a while, it is well worth it.
