I need a new catalytic converter. Midas told me that I have to use an original cat ($750) in California because there is no approved universal fit. Is there an approved direct fit? Is this BS? Need help!

I can vouch for the dealer in FL charging my brother $750 for the OEM catcon when he owned my truck.

check other shops besides midas. I used to go to midas until they wanted to charge me $54.00 for 6 spark plugs. The place near me did good work, just charge 150-200% markup for parts.

Cool! Thanks xm202radio. Have you had your truck smogged since replacing it? Get any trouble for it?

That is the only cat that can be used obdII compliantin california.

I had the element in my cat disintegrate and I needed to replace it here in southern california in my 97 Dakota and almost ran into the same problem. I went to a local muffler shop [November of 2003] and asked them about it. He told me about the OBDII cats and california law. Then he told me I was in luck. Because a company had just gotten California's approval to sell after-market OBDII-compliant cats about 4 months earlier. It wasn't cheap, as it cost about $300 installed, but it sure beat the $7-800 for a factory cat. So I KNOW there are aftermarket OBDII compliant cats for our trucks out there, but I don't know what the brand was.

By the way, after over a year of use, I had to smog the truck, and I was IMPRESSED with how clean the emissions were for a Federal truck in California [gift from Oregon relatives after it reached 120,000 miles].

With oem-type plugs/wires/rotor/cap and a K&N oem filter [only performance mods to my 97 Dakota], it was a LOT cleaner than last time [and the above parts had not been changed in a year], and cleaner than the average.

For example, the average HC emissions at 15/25 mph are 8/6, with a max of 52/36. In this category, my truck came in at 1/1. In the CO emissions, with an average of .02/.02, my truck came in at .00/.00. In NO emissions, with an average of 82/74, my truck had 16/0. In % of O2, it measured 0.1/0.0.

Sorry if this is too much technical stuff, but I am very happy that it passed with flying colors.

That is why I have been so concerned about changing headers/exhaust/throttle-body/air intake systems. I don't want to have emissions problems to get more power. It isn't worth the money to me if my emissions increases and I have trouble passing in the future.

SO, there ARE aftermarket OBDII compliant Cats for our trucks available in southern california, and they do an excellent job of scrubbing the garbage out of the exhaust.
