Message: Anyone know of a good place online to read a repair manual for the 98 Dak's? I went to the dealer today and asked about the service manual and they said it will run me about $135 + tax (CDN)which is kinda nuts.....
Thanks,
Drew.

Message: That $135 manual, while it is really expensive, is aboot 3" thick and covers every freakin nut, bolt and washer from bumper to bumper. Even if you never intend on repairing anything aboot the rear axle, there are diagrams, charts, exploded views and descriptions of EVERYTHING aboot the rear axle of the V-8 trucks, the rear axle of the V-6 trucks, and the rear axle of the I-4 trucks.
It is a worthwhile resource to own even if it is a bit pricey.
If you really don't want to buy it, I would suggest doing a Google search for Chilton's or even Haynes. They both create pretty good and widely accepted repair manuals.

Message: I went to www,amazon.com and bought a Haynes Repair Manual for my 98 Dak. I compared both the Chiltons and the Haynes manuals and thought the Haynes actually covered more material. I have been reading the manual and have actually learned alot from the material inside.
Mark
btw: The book cost me less than 20, including shipping.

Message: There are a few things to look at, check your battery connections and condition of the battery itself, inspect all wires thru the battery, starter solenoid and ignition switch for bad connections, to see if the igition switch is at fault. Go to your libary, or buy a haynes, chilton manual, to find a ignition switch schematic then check continuity between the switch terminals.
If no luck, make sure the shift lever is in neutral or park. While cranking the starte motor if it does nothing while cranking, but the solenoid clicks, then either a battery problem, starter relay, main solenoid contacts, or the starter motor itself is bad. if the solenoid cannot be heard, it's bad battery, the fusible link is burned(open circut), or the solenoid is bad.
To check solenoid, run a lead from battery + terminal to the small terminal switch on the solenoid, if it works now the solenoid is fine, but the problem is in ignition switch, neutral start switch, or in the wiring.
Place a meter on the starter and crank the engine (no more than 15 turns)normal crank voltage is 9 volts plus, if 9 volts is there but cranking speed is slow, its a bad motor. If less than 9 volts and cranking speed slow, it's burned solenoid contacts, bad starter, bad battery, or bad connections. Good luck, take your time, follow the path the current takes and try to see each step in the iginition start-up process. The answer is always right under your nose...

Message: You may also have a flat spot on your starter
next time it does that crawl under and tap the
starter and see if it than turns over.
Or a bad relay
The switch you can check with a voltmeter, all you
need to check is the wire on the relay for power
key in crank posision

Message: Wilson: If it is an automatic be sure the shift linkage is not out of adjustment. Some times you can pull up on the shift lever when you are trying to start it and it will start. My brother in law got stranded at midnight right after he had the tranny rebuilt and the only problem was the linkage had slipped.

Message: I have a 1994 Dodge Dakota and one day I pulled it into the garage and everything worked fine but the next day I went to start it and nothing. I have power to the starter but it won't turn over, battery has full volts , and the ingnition switch I had tested and is also fine. I am racking my brain to try and figure out what the problem is to get this started. I realy can't afford to take it to the shop so if there is anyone that can give me any idea of what might be the problem, I think I have tried everything.

Message: Wow, this thread is almost two years old and you pulled it out of where?!? I sold that truck awhile ago...
Anyway, check to make sure the starter is engaging properly, could need to regrease it. If you have the knowledge, pull it off and look at it. Also, check all your fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, etc.

Message: you could have a problem with either the positive or negative battery cable. some times they will develop corrosion inside and build up enough resistance to cause problems when you put an heavy draw on them like the starter.
