Subject: '92 v6 engine shut off
IP: Logged

Message:
The engine in my '92 3.9 dakota will just shutoff without warning, whether I am driving down the freeway at 70 or just idling in a parking lot. It usually happens within the 1st 5 minutes I start it up after it has not been running for an hour or so.

Usually I am forced to steer off the road to restart. Sometimes it starts right back up, other times it takes a good 10 minutes, but after it starts, it doesnt shut off again for the duration of the trip.
I've had this problem for a good 6 months at least.

I have replaced the distributor cap and rotor, o2 sensor, fuel filter, new sparkplugs and cables, and it does not show any codes whatsoever.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Well you havent replaced the ignition coil yet but usually when they die they don't come back. Two more places to look and then a third if you strike out: There is either a hall effect pickup coil in the distributor that basically drops dead. This is the electronic sensor you can see under the rotor-has two wires that run out of the distributor through a grommet. It's like a $35 part plus you may need to remove the distributor to replace it so you need a timing light and distributor wrenches. That basically applies to pre-magnum 239 and 318's. If your 92 motor has a camshaft position sensor that died, it will also cause intermittent shut-off like the Hall effect pickup. You have one or the other sensors but not both, if i am not mistaken. If these sensors are good, there is a relay to check. In the relay/fuse box in the engine compartment on the drivers side firewall there is an ASD relay. Swap this relay out with the one right next to it and then start the engine. Turn on the A/C and see if the electric fan comes on (if equipped). If the A/c and Fan don't operate, then the ASD relay is suspect. I suggest you look at the relays before digging into the distributor (or camshaft sensor if equiped). The other thing I can suggest is you have a short circuit. Done any electrical work on the truck? Look over your work. look for a bare splice or stripped wire touching the chassis creating a short. Also look at the pigtail (bunch of wires) that comes from the SMEC on the passenger firewall. There is a large connector that often will carrode and short. One other place to look for a short is beneath the relay box on the drivers side where you looked at the relays. There is a primary hot circuit that is spliced to two or three other circuits. Inspect the poor factory splice. Do a search here for more details or if I am a little off as this is all from memory. Good Luck. IF you exhaust these checks and still have trouble, you may have a very sick computer. I replaced my smec for about $180 for a remanufactured SMEC from CarQuest. New ones are about twice that much. Boneyard computers are probably less but may not be compatable (software-wise). No codes kinda makes me suspect these possible problems.

I have already replaced the cam sensor and the whole distributor, sensor and all. The relay still works as well, and no visable shorts. All electrical in the truck still works. Also, I have noticed that after it dies, when I am trying to start it again, I smell gas. It almost sounds like it is flooding itself, and the reason it takes a little while to restart is because the plugs are wet?

sounds like the fuel pump

next time it does not start pull a plug and see
if its getting fuel

ASD
Fuel pump
IGN

All these have relays in the power dist box buy
1 new one and try it in the 3 diff spots they are
all the same and see if this cures the prob
they do go bad

I just had my ASD go bad cranked motor and flooded
the dam thing, changed the A/C relay to ASD and
now it pops off right away, don't need A/C in 0
degree weather anyway.

I am going to replace all 3 at 104,000 miles its
time

Smells like gas. Good sign that fuel pump is working. I cant tell if you have throttle body injection so if you do - With an assistant, take air hat off and look into the throttle body and have your buddy turn it over. If you see gas, start thinking short-circuit, relays, bad connections, and computer. If you don't see gas, verify that the pump works. Note that the fuel pump might be intermittent (works when you check it but dies later just to piss you off). Do as Larry said on multiport applications. Bob has a good point too, if you are equipped with the MAP. Is your motor multiport injection? What about that ignition coil? And, why did you need the new distributor? What is your gap on the sparkplugs (just curious)? Does it idle OK when it is running hot or cold? When it cuts off and is difficult to start, check to see if you get spark out of the coil...If no spark, 1. bad coil, 2. ASD relay shot, 3. SMEC failing (note that the ignition module is in there), 4. Short between distributor and SMEC (check pigtails and harness), 5. You bought a bad cps/bad distributor electronics. I could be wrong but I thought the CPS replaced the function of the Hall effect pickup when the 239 and 318's went to multiport injection, thats why I asked what kind of fuel injection you have. Did all this begin after you r&r'ed the Distributor? Generally, If the Air is there, the Gas is Good, the Ignition is the Malfunction. If the coil is OK and the new parts are good, my gut still suspects the computer or a short with what you are seeing and smelling.
