I have a 2000 Dakota with the 3.9L V-6 and a 5-speed manual transmission, and the engine seems to have a mind of its own. I have the consistent problem of it failing to decelerate when I release the throttle between shifts. Essentially, the computer is still giving the engine fuel even though I am not giving it that input with the gas pedal. It will hang at approximately 2000 RPMs for a few seconds and will gradually drop. I have to either wait on it, or just let the clutch out with the engine going way too fast for the next gear, which jerks the truck forward abruptly (and infuriates its driver). Between shifts is not the only time I have this problem. I also frequently have trouble steadying the engine anywhere between idle and 1500 RPMs. For example, if I'm easing through a parking lot in first or second gear and I touch the gas pedal with the slightest effort, the engine jerks up to 1500 RPMs like I just nailed it. I HATE this! It's SO annoying and makes me look like an idiot. The strangest thing about it is that the engine does not always do it. This problem comes an goes with no predictability -- it does not correspond with accessories, such as AC, or conditions, such as extreme cold. I took it to the dealership several times when it was new and still under warranty. They replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, checked all the computer settings to make sure they were consistent with factory specs, and they even reprogrammed the PCM, all to no avail. It still does it after 72,000 miles just like it did the day I brought it home brand new. Someone, PLEASE help me out with this! Anybody heard of this problem? Do the V-8's do this? What can I do to make it stop???

either your throttle is binding somewhere or it's the TPS. check the voltage @ center wire key "on" engine "off". should be between .35 to .9 vdc. the with the vom still connected move the throttle slowly to full open watching the voltage and then let it return to idle. it should return to the original voltage reading with throttle closed. if not, definitely the TPS.

get back about 150 yards and shoot it with an RPG, too close and you will pull a "Kerry"

Yeah, I think about shooting it sometimes.

Thanks for your input. I'm not too savy with all the electrical stuff, but I have a repair manual and will try to do some investigating when I get a chance. I've read about the IAC motor and the TPS and it makes sense that their input into the computer would affect this problem. I have noticed that if I'm going down a hill at highway speeds, let off of it completely and let it coast in neutral, the engine will not idle steady but instead will bounce back and forth from about 750 to about 900 RPMs. It will not become steady until I come to a complete stop. Bizarre! Does this makes a strong case for the IAC motor? What if both sensors are operating fine? Should I then conclude that the engine is just a piece of s*#t and I need to find a good used V-8 for it?

I own a '88 3.9 with TBI. Honestly i dont think it has anything to do with the Powertrain Control Module or PCM. I used to have the same problem and reprogramed my ECM. It helped it a little but it didnt make the problem go away. So i decided to do some digging. I did a little research and thought it was My Idle Controller and found it to be faulty. I replaced it and it still did it. I dont know if u can on a SMPI engine but what i did on my TBI is i adjusted the idle control myself with an 8mm wrench. and the following happened.
1. Idle stayed at 750 and never went above 1300
2. Gas consumption went down.
3. stopped burning overly rich

Not quite sure it will help but i figured it will be worth a shot.
