Message: I've owned 6's before but my 99 Dakota has no power.
I bought it new,4x4, ex cab, auto, best gas milage 18 mpg.
You can push the pedal down 1 inch and get no responce unless you kick it down a gear,it doesn't matter what gear it's in it does the same thing.
Every year I think I'm going to fix this but it has yet to happen.
Just tuned up and new cat, still gutless.
Are these motors under horse power for the truck?
It's so gutless I would have got rid of it long ago but I like the truck.

They are definitely not ' hemis ' , but see
above link for some improvement and if you do some
searches even on this site you will find out
about colder air intake and other helpfull
mods for that little bit more..

Message: Thanks for the reply, not realy what I was looking for.
I just want the horse power I paid for no tricks.
After reading what you suggested it looks like I would have to find someone who cares enough to listen to my problem and take the time to check all the sensors and settings.
One more question, or the same one different,is a 99 6 auto a dog?
Well one more, know anyone in the Toronto area who is good?

Message: You bought the truck new and it was that way...it is going to be that way without doing performance mods. the 3.9 is not a runner as a stock piece. my 93 is the same way, you just have to put the pedal down till it downshifts then back off a little bit...get used to it unless you want to do some mods. i plan to do the crank sensor mod to get a few extra ponies, i have put on a v-8 tb and changed every sensor and put a performance muffler on. so far it has helped, but she still nees some more nuts

Message: I have a 95 with this problem, only mine comes and goes. Sometimes at highway speeds it has all kinds of power.Other times no matter how far you push the pedal,(till it kicks down) it does not respond in any way at all. I should say it is 4x4,3.9L with 120,500,and the best I get for gas milg. is 16. Something is wrong but what????

Message: Sometimes my truck seems to have more power to.
Most times it is gutless but sometimes it wants to go.
Or somedays it just seems the wind is at your back.
Most days it feels like I am fighting a head wind.
With so many guys here I thought I would get a better responce than soup it up.
The other day no load, 50 mph up large hill,3rd gear almost on the floor a little bit more and I would have been in 2nd gear, gravel trucks were passing me,that sucks.Although I love this truck,I've had it since new,130,000 km never again.
Tell me they are all dogs or tell me how to fix it and I will tell you how to fix your HVAC.

Message: G ive it a tune up, replace the spark plugs, wires and rotor button. Run some throttle body cleaner throught it and also some fuel injection cleaner. Carbon build up is the enemy.

Message: Check your plenum gasket too. That kills any performance. But if you want more performance, be prepared to do a little work. Throttle body, cat-back, roller rockers, and other things that you see the rest of us doing to improve performance. Also remember this is a truck intended for doing truck work. It will never be a Vette, but that dosen't mean you can't have fun with it. Good luck on your search for more performance.

Message: Have you made sure that the truck is giving off a strong spark? For some odd reason you may want to run a engine compression test. Test you fuel pressure, the pump my be burning out or the fuel filter may be clogged. I'll think of more stuff. If anything I will talk to my boss....I work for a mechanic.

Message: Last tuneup was two weeks ago.
New cat,pluggs,wires,cap,front end work,oil change,analiser test,$1000 worth of work.
Poor performance since new.
It has ran worse but a tune up makes it the same as it was new guttless.
Tune up before samething with gas filter.
Two years with one shop,3 years with another, last tune up by the third shop, still no answers.
I have done Heating and A/C for 34 years so I know a little about mechanics but I don't work on my truck or car.
I'm looking for suggestion for my mechanic and questions to ask him.
Thanks for your input.

Message: What is it that all the skilled mechanics that have tested your truck say is wrong? I think we can only suggest what a good mechanic should have tested; do you have compression within specks, what is the fuel sync and pressure, is there fault codes in the computer and so on? One thing that may be overlooked is the cam shaft. GM has a bigger problem with high cam wear than Dodge but it is something to check. A dial indicator can be used to check valve lift. Look down the throttle body into the intake manifold, do you see oil? If so the plenum gasket could be bad. With more information about your truck, like the information above, one can make good suggestions to try. Hopefully the answer is out there to restore your truck to factory performance level, and if you like, to add a few horsepower too. Good luck.

Message: check compression. if everything is ok there, spend about 35 bucks for a used v8 TB same yr as yours from a local salvage yard. see what happens. you will notice a little improvement(notice i said little)but, hey you'll only be out the money for the TB.
is it pinging any? could be the bellypan gskt. look down the bore of the tb and open the throttle. if it's excessively oily/dirty in there, the belly pan is probably leaking.
another thing, the truck could have gotten the dreaded "Death Flash" from the dealer when is was new. it was a cheap fix for DC for customers complaining of pinging. not much you can do for that except the CPS mod(you can search on this board to find out how, not very hard) and try to recoup some of the timing the "Death Flash" took away. or you can change gears to something like 3.92 or 4.10:1
hope this helps. let us know.
