 Subject: Mercon V instead of +4

I'm a little low in my 01 with a 3.9L. Haven't been able to find any +4 anywhere without going to the dealer. Just want to top off for a month till I do a fluid change and replace rear shaft seal. I figure V is probably better than +3. I've been told this is a 42RE. Is that correct, I want to get a manual?

Someone on here had that put in instead of atf +3 or 4 in a shop on accident.
He had strange shift problems and it started to slip.
I think it was on the 4.7 though.

Like Red Green said, "The three hardest words for a man to say are - I DON'T KNOW." If you really don't know, it is ok not to post. I am only talking about a half quart. How is V worse than 80K fluid! I count my blessings though, at least I didn't get the Amzoil guy.

That was really stupid. Mercon V is a lot different that ATF+4. Mopar is the only place to get the ATF+4. I sell the Mopar ATF+4 out of my Auto Parts Store. Whats $6.00 a quart compared to a new tranny. I also stock and sell some of the Amsoil products, such as the tranny fluid for these dodges. I would get that thing flushed asap.

sorry, but I have to call dumbass on this one. Why would you switch families completely and go to Mercon? Topping off with ATF+3 would have been a smart move since +4 is recommended for +3 applications... IOW they can surely be mixed without harm.
BTW - Some fluids just don't mix. If you have DOT3 brake fluid and you just top it off with a little DOT5 brake fluid, you will make jelly in your brake lines. However, DOT 3 and DOT4 are in the same family and in a pinch you can surely mix them.
Not knowing what you are doing, and then just trying it because it "can be all that bad" is ok if you are driving a POS on its way to the junkyard. Why would you ever try it on a nice truck that you could potentially cause $$$$$$$$$ damage?
Some folks just aren't meant to do maintenance. I suggest you go to a lube quickie place and have them do your maintenance :-( Sorry to be blunt, but you've earned it.

Cmon cut the poor guy some slack. He didn't know but at least he had the common sense to ask before he went and did it. Dont sit there and tell me that every single person that responded to this is so perfect that they never made a mistake. I had my tranny done at my work and they put DEX in it, I was underneath the truck at the time and the guy that put the fluid in was an actual mechanic.

Of trivia interest: "dum dum dum" were the only words ever spoken by Harpo Marx in a Marx Brothers' movie.
Well it took three weeks, but my alternative automotive supplier finally came through today. Four gallons of authentic MOPAR ATF+4 at only $1 a quart. After reading the wonderful things on the label and the price, I just might put this in my Ford too. Ever wonder if the dealer really puts the number of quarts in that they say they do? Makes you think.

And most dealers arent evil like people make them out to be. That trend really needs to end.

well you can throw some egg on my face! I read the second post this morning and I thought he was saying that he went ahead and did it anyway and justified it by saying it had to be better then the old fluid. I didn't realise that he was just second guessing the info given. Had I realized that, I would not have come down so hard. My apologies.

Mobil is now making the claim that thier Mercon V synthetic blend can be used in ATF+4 applications, so maybe you are only as dumb as those idiots at the largest oil company in the U.S. For all of those who don't believe go to the Mobil website and read the specs. on the Mercon V. I doubt you will ahve any problems

very interesting indeed. M1 does state that you can use it for Chrysler calling for +3 or +4. But, I noticed this...
Mobil Mercon V Synthetic Blend has the following builder approvals:
Ford Mercon V
Ford Mercon
General Motors’ Dexron III
General Motors’ Dexron II
I don't see DC approval. So, will they give those in warranty a hassle? Maybe.

DC will not give approval to any fluid but thier own, just ask all the Amsoils, Schaffer's, and Redline's out there. If you feel comfortable running a universal fluid from one of these smaller oil companies with the same claim and no DC endorsement, I don't see why you wouldn't feel comfortable running a fluid with the same claim from the largest oil company in the United States. JMHO.
