 Subject: 1990 3.9 no start

My buddies 1990 Dakota 3.9 lunched a distributor, I replaced the distributor and now only have momentary voltage to the coil when ignition is initially turned on. Anybody know what would cause this condition? I looked back at a number of simular no spark situations and could not find one that applied to a 1990. No codes are present. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my buddy needs his truck asap.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it? Sort of a "reboot" of the onboard computer? Let me go snoopin' on my manual and see if there's anything in the troubleshooter section.
I'd be interested in following your little adventure. Just acquired a '90 3.9 about a month ago. Great little truck.

I'm ASSUMING that you've got good contact between the rotor and center electrode for the cap... and doesn't have a bad cap on it, or a broken coil wire.

of mine who teaches an auto shop class... His input was: "My first reaction is to think of the ICM. If it is a computer-controlled ignition system, the computer should control the ground to supply primary voltage for spark.
BUT- what I tell students every day is to get out the OEM service manual and follow it. There's way too many variables these days to always get it by using your own personal logic on 'em.
So my first trip would be to the 'puter for the Shopkey or the Alldata or the OEM manual.
Sorry that ain't the "hook wire A to socket B" answer, but it's where I'd go if it were my own.
If there's a Dodge Dakota wrench readin', maybe they can offer a gem that will shortcut the process."
One last thought I had... ya got a good connection right at the distributor?

Cap,rotor,plug wires are fine, the problem is the voltage signal to the coil is only there for a 2 count after ignition is turned on, its as if a relay is disconnecting the signal.

the computer needs to read a signal from the dist to fire coil
what i,m trying to say is you get fire[voltage]to the coil to start the motor,if the pcm does,nt get this feedback it will cancel out the fire to the coil and shut the fuel pump off
try this,with someone cranking the motor test for voltage at the coil,you should have voltage,if you do then you have something else giving you problems for not starting
first i,d get a repair manual with wiring diagram,but you may want to try these things,coil
and/or pick-up in dist,fuel pump and the pcm could be the problem

Found the problem...not good. Oil pump drive gear teeth shaved off!! Time for reman engine.
