i have dumb question...i recently went to change the spark plugs on my g/f's dakota. there is a metal sleeve around the plugs that my plug socket will not fit into...is there a special tool for removing these sleeves in order to get to the plugs or do they screw out?...i don't want to damage anything

they are just pushed in there. get a pr of channel loc pliers, squeeze the shield and twist it back and forth while pulling up on it. they will come right out. but i don't understand how a 5/8" spark plug wrench will not fit in there. i used one all the time before i removed the sheilds on mine.

I don't recommend removing them unless you're really determined.

Why?

I did it. And I almost had to get my truck towed to finish the job after the #1 shield had broken off in pieces and STILL wouldn't come out. After lots of chiseling it finally came out, but it took hours to do it.

Use a 5/8" socket and an extension or two...it's also good to use a u-joint socket extension thing to break those harder to reach plugs loose...mostly the one under the brake booster.
