Subject: 3.9 engine knock IP: Logged
Message: I have been reading alot here about engine knock and have the usual engine ping with my Dakota 90.
I have replaced plug wires and coolant sensor, but no change. I was wondering if the knock sensor could be the problem? No one has mentioned that possiblity. would I be waisting my money if I changed it?

Message: Does anyone have a sound file of what this problem sounds like?... I have a problem with mine but I'm not thinking that this is the problem.... as a side effect when i push the gas the motor seems to "gargle" ? it has a verry deep almost drowning sound and doesn't have verry much pickup at all....and just seems to get worse when the overdrive kicks in at 60KPH.. also the gas mileage seems to have gotten alot worse,
I have a HAWK cap on the back, '98 cc 3.9, K&N Drop-in Filter, Stock everything else..
I took it to the dealer and all they say is "Well it's a V6 thats what they sound like"
But i've had 6 other v6's and this is the only one that did this.. :(
HELP..
Thanks in advance
Drew

Message: for what it's worth, i lost a LOT of pickup a few weeks ago and gas mileage dropped from 20 to about 12. Replaced distributor and cap and that did the trick for my 98 3.9.
as for the knock, i've had the same problem since I bought the truck. my question is what the heck is a knock sensor??

Message: It's basically a little sensor that detects irregular, sharp, vibrations (knocks) in the engine and then reports it to the computer. The computer, basically, busts a nut over this and freaks out, shoves everything into "OH CRAP" mode and puts on the "Check Engine" light while it says a little prayer to the truck gods. :0)

Message: I had a knocking in my engine since i had the truck. It would start at idle and as i increased the speed, it would knock faster. My dealer said it was a normal truck sound. A few months later, they fould out the previous owner did a little driving with possibly no oil. The knocking: A piston was rubbing. Got me a whole new "refurbished" engine. No knocking now.

Message: Hi, I have a 99,4x4,V6,5 speed dakota. The problem i'm getting is when i have to push the truck a little harder like going up hills,i am getting a clicking like sound. A friend said it was engine ping. But only when i hit the gas and the truck needs to work, like if i'm in to high of a gear for instance going up hill I really hear it...Please give me a hint on how to fix this...THX. I was told getting the injectors flushed out!

Message: With my 2000 you can turn the key to the accessory position three times and then leave it there. It will display the codes in the odometer. Go to http://www.obdii.com/codes.asp , type in your codes, and it will tell you what they mean.

Message: i went to my parts guy on a hit from a professional engine builder that i should maybe try a cooler plug . champion makes a cooler plug for the 2000 dakota ,since installing them i get little or no knock on regular gas . got a little more get up out of her to. it also helped when i took out the original bolt that holds the breather in place on the throttle body and replaced it with a piece of threaded rod ,

Message: I know it's 12 years late, but my 98 3.6 Dakota has the same
gurgling sounds!!! I can't afford a new motor, and I don't have
many tools. I can't figure out if it's a valve issue or an early
knock from rod bearing wear... So disappointed
