Subject: ABS IP: Logged
Message: I've been looking around, and I did find an old post about it, but didn't get any kind of answer from it. My abs light has been on for some time now and just recently, anytime I brake more than softly, the abs kicks on. Before you say it's the rotors, they're not warped. I can actually hear the abs system engage and it's quite annoying. If it was just engaging and not causing problems, so be it, but the truck doesn't seem to stop as fast or as smoothly as before so I would really like to get this fixed. Anyone have any ideas?

Message: have you tried bleeding the brakes?
check a service manual but most
ABS system require bleeding every so many miles
to stay working properly
(i'll guess mostly to flush old fluid out)

Message: New to Dakotas and can barely find the ignition seitch, but typically this ABS problem is because of a defective speed sensor that tells the ABS one wheel isn't turning. Sounds like the pump assembly is still fine and doing its job. Brake fluid does absorb water and it is a good idea to flush these out every couple of years since a new pump can cost several thousand on some vehicles. Without getting the code read it is pretty hard to find the defective sensor.
