Subject: ok, super or stroker...

Ok, I'm getting my bounus this year, and I'm think about one of 2 things. Either stroking or supercharging my 3.9L Both would be about the same cost for the builds I would want to do. My main question is 2 part

1. I drive nearly 55 miles a day (24,000 in one year) and don't want to kill my mileage too much (hence why I got the v6 and not the v8). So, which one will kill my mileage more. Its mostly driving about 60 mph (@ about 1900-2000 rps).

2. If the mileage isn't that much different between the two, which would be the better choice. I like the super since I can put that on in a weekend. I like the stoker since there is no sub for more cubic inches, and I would build the motor from the ground up. I can paint it orange, and have the stock motor in storage to do more to it. Plus I plan on keeping this truck for many years, and with 24K a year, I think haveing an extra motor would be a good thing.

Thanks

strocker will burn more gas since it has more cubic inches.super charger will add power on demand so if you are light on the throttle you should maintain your current millage.

Hey,you dont have to justify your V6 to us. Anyone can get power from a V8. Trickin out a V6 is alot more intresting.

enjoy .....

i would stroke it. no worries about an s/c(belts, bearings, etc..). easier to tune. IMO, less hassle, more reliable.

Stroke it! Either way will burn more fuel since the goal is the same....cramming more air into the engine. The more air you add, the more fuel you need to maintain the proper mixture. A light foot will help lessen the mileaage impact on either. A stroker is a stealthy way to go since when all buttoned up, nothing can be seen. No extra pulleys, belts, etc. This can be especially useful in emissions testing, especially visual inspections. I agree with JFH. If you get in a situation where you want even more power, you can always add boost later.

who's making a stroker crank for the 3.9? i need to build a motor for mine, and if i can stroke it, that would just be cool. after all, im building the truck for autocrossing, as well as the shop truck for the hot rod shop.
oh yeah, its my daily driver with 200,000 on the clock, and i still havent killed the six.
anyway, let me know where you guys are finding these parts, like heads and intakes and cams to keep up with the blowers and turbos.
thanks

Stroking the V6 adds a lot of low end torque and
will get better mileage having to work less to
push the truck upto speed

I have 2 the 1 I was running got 22 to 24mpg
consistantly unless I drove like a totel nut than
it would drop to 19 and 1 set of tires a year
from lighting them up all the time with the 3.91
sure grip hitting it more than 1/4 throttle it
would break them lose hit second at wot and lay
4 to 8 feet of ruber down

cant wait to get my new 1 in my truck this spring
with 4.10 gears should be just over 300hp at the
wheels, my other was 267/305 and would do 130mph
top end very scarry driving a dak that fast they
begain to float 14.4 @ 97mph 1/4 mile in a G2 4X4
short box sport

Stroke it the power will always be there to use
and you will be very happy you did

With just the stroking 225 hp at the crank and the
stock comp will run it as long as you have a good
set of injecters
92 to 99 19lb FMS
00 and up 21lb FMS
design 2 or 3 4 or six hole spray
the stock injecters have a lean out prob around
3000 rpm

could you give me more info concerning what else, and where to purchase, the parts for the 225 at the carnk motor, in specific the injectors that will be needed, and the crank and pistons?
also, will i need to run a stand alone efi system, or can the actory computer cope with the bigger displacement?
thanks.

I've been doing a lot of research regarding engines and theories on how they make torque and power while attending the Nascar Technical Institute and I have a question for Larry on this...

When stroking the crank are you running a smaller or larger stroke??? I was wondering this because if you run a shorter stroke and a longer connecting rod the engine will rev up faster and still develop quite a bit of torque due to the fact that the piston's dwell time is inhanced... In other words the time the piston is kept at TDC is enhanced allowing the piston to absorb more of the energy durring the power stroke... I think this was developed by Smokey Yunick durring his engine experimenting days... I mean it just looks like to me with the 3.9's that they would benefit from this technology quite a bit by allowing them to rev like a V8 and develop more torque at the same time... But I'm also assuming that the cam would also have to be changed for this as well like any other stroker to really benefit from the build...

Anyway I was just wondering if you were running a longer stroke with a shorter rod or a shorter stroke with a longer rod in your stroker motors to develop all of the power and torque that you are developing... Also aren't the cranks that your running billet so you can request any profile you want or are they only available in one set profile???

Thanks,
Greg

well, considering the trends in gas prices lately, the best move i ever made was trading my 5.9 ram for a 3.9 dakota, thats why i'd say stroker 3.9 instead of v8 swap.

plus theres a lot more involved in a v8 swap; front suspension, tranny, possibly radiator, pcm, etc
