Subject: Intake Manifold Polish IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I just got my extra intake manifold from the salvage yard, and I am about to start stripping and cleaning it before I do a gasket match and stuff. Anyway, I was trying to find a post I thought I read a while ago about how it wasn't good to polish the inside of the manifold, or somehting like that. I can't remember why, but if anyone knows about any info on this, or why it might be bad, could you let me know?
Thnaks,
J-Man

Message: Unless you have a carb or TBI, that information is irrelevant. The idea was to keep the fuel in suspension. Still, polishing yeilds little or no results.
Without modifying the heads, I see little point in gasket matching. You'll find differing opinions on this, but now tests to support any of them. I bevel and radius the ports inside the manifold and smooth out the fist couple of inches just smooth the transition of the air into the runners. Don't waste your time on excessive polishing, just remove casting flash and the parting lines. You can also, carefully, port the area below the injectors.
Some people will polish the entire interior of the manifold and that is about as silly as polishing the top of your tb.
While it's off, you might also consider other mods such as filling to reduce volume or the addition of a turtle, which directs airflow and reduces volume.
Have fun.

Evidently you have never took a close look at the
heads and intake
The head ports are matched within 1/16 of the
gasket the intakes have a very bad casting on most
it hangs down into the port 1/4" and on some the
injecter spray actually hits this.
Polishing will not help much but that port needs
to be cleaned up on the intake it helps a lot

Message: Thanks guys. Pretty much answers my questions, but I do have another one now.
About that turtle....
What exactly does directing the airflow do, simply improve speed?
Also, about the divider, should I get rid of it completely, shorten it, or just leave it in there?
Thanks

Message: I also have an extra intake to work on. Just make sure that you have one that is compatable w/ the year truck you have (i.e. egr or non-egr).As for cutting the divider from what I can tell from reading differant post is that you should remove it. I've got mine cut 1/2 way out and can't find good tools to get in there and remove the 2nd 1/2. Then gasket match and enjoy. I'm also polishing the outside for looks (what a pain in the #ss)Maybe done by the LAST frost.
