Subject: Larry: Is there a problem? IP: Logged
Message: Hi larry,
I've read alot of posts and you say that lots of the v-6's you've set up get upwards of 24mpg. well I need your help. I have a 93 3.9 4x4 Auto and i cannot pull better then 17 on the highway. all of my sensors are new (O2, Map, Tps, Temp), I have a v-8 tb, flowmaster muffler, 3923's. Everything I try has no effect on my mileage..could I have a problem I have overlooked?
Any input is appreciated...Thanks

Message: I hate to say it but the one thing you may have overlooked is the weight of the 4x4 vehicle. More than anything else MPG is a function of work performed and extra weight is more work the for the engine and more fuel is required to get that work done. That is why you are seeing so many aluminum and plastic parts on late model vehicles...it is a full tilt effort by the manufactures to get the weight of the vehicles down and MPG up.

pull the plastic cover off where the cold air
tube hooks to the rad sattle, use K&N drop in
replacement filter they flow more air and you
never have to buy another just wash and re-oil
My truck is a 4X4 and I still pull 22 to 25mpg
One thing you need to check is the injector sync.
32mm or 1 1/4 socket
Turn vibration damper to 0 TDC be sure rotor is
aming at or near #1 plug wire if not just turn
again and check crank has a 2 to 1 ratio with cam
Now look straight down over the rotor it will
be aming towards pass side for 1
On the pickup plate in dist there is a line marked
cyl
Looking from front of truck back and over rotor
the button back edge towards you should line up
with this cyl line
centered would be 0 behind this line - side
This will be aprox +3 they come from the factory
set anywhere from 0 to -6
0____
like this little diagram with the 0 being the
rotor button and the underscore the cyl line
Another thing that will help because you do not
have to many mods down is going back to the
stock heat range plug AP3924 or AP5224 and gap
at .040 .045
The plat tip plug takes less voltage to jump the
gap alowing you to open the gap and create a
bigger flame front and a little faster burn
Be sure your wires are good
On the stock ign a Napa mo26 mo28 cap and rotor
with solid brass incerts helps transfer more volts
around $15
Also for around $60 a set of MSD 8.5 super
conducter wires will help they have about a 3rd
the resistance than stock and will also carrie
more volts to the plugs. get for 93 with 5.2
just have 2 wires left over but a perfict fit
and no messing around with a universal set putting
the ends on
The colder plug does work well in some stock
trucks but is used after many mods are done
Another thing that would help you would be the
crank sensor mod.
The 93 has bushings so I would sugest a new sensor
that has the steel top mount. slot the holes and
move down towards oil filter this will give you 3
to 4 degree's advance help power and mileage
All you need to do to remove the sensor behind
pass side head down by bell housing under EGR tube
is losen the egr tube a little and it will come
out slot 3/8 and reinstall
Be sure you remove the rubber from the hole so the
sensor will move over
KRC has an article on the sensor mod
http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html
Do these few things and your mileage has no choice
but to get better
Have a happy thanks giving

Message: Thanks larry, ill start on some of that. i am at school right now so i doubt i can do the injector sync at this point. another thing i have been wondering about is my intake...could my belly pan be leaking? and to answer P2gee, yes i know the truck weighs more, thats why after i get done typing this i am goin to look into the price of a 92 318 from my near by friendly junkyard. :) thanks guys

Message: I get about 20.5mpg @ 65 to 70mph with a heavy truck - see below.
One simple item - tire pressure - make sure the tires are properly inflated.
I have mine at 40psi cold.
Higher psi are recommended for higher speeds and when loaded.
Try increasing the tire pressure and letting us know what happens.
