Subject: 93 Dakota: no spark IP: Logged
Message: I just put a used '97 V6 in my 93 dakota. Swapped fuel rails and injectors, oil pan, coil, distributor, alternator, and cps from my old engine. All else under the hood is original (wiring harness, vacuum lines, etc.) Broke the cps during swap, and replaced with new one. Hooked up the alternator wiring wrong the first time (grounded the alt.-to-starter wire) with the battery in. Alternator is wired correctly now. Upon trying to start it up for the first time, I have no spark at the coil. Checked fuses, tested coil, traced wires. No luck. Any ideas? Thanks.

Message: I just had the same problem. Ended up being a wire for the fuel pump.

Message: From a Previous post:
"Right below the underhood fusebox, about 8" down the harness is a splice (#115), from that splice, it powers the PCM, Fuel Pump, and Coil. All four wires are Red/white, one comes from the fusebox, two go right back up to the relays, and the fourth goes the opposite direction to the PCM. You will have to unbolt the fusebox, pull it out of the way, and cut open the tape on the harness to find the splice.
I guess what happens is that water gets into the fusebox, drains down the harness, and eventually corrodes the splice into green powder (oxidized copper). You cannot tell if it is bad by looking at it, you will have to cut the tape off of the splice and inspect the connection. If you see and green or white residue on the connection under the tape, it has started to go bad and needs to be re-done (preferably by soldering).
This problem can be very intermittent, sometimes just a single miss while cruising down the highway, sometimes just a long cranking time, mine was even sensitive to temperature (28-40F) and high humidity. The problem in my 94 Dak occurred intermittently 30+ times and over $1000 in parts over a year. Finally one day it just died in Toledo, luckily I was walking distance from Vin Devers Dodge. When I got there, they were closing in 5 minutes, one of the mechanics there said he new exactly what the problem was, grabbed some tools and drove me back to my truck to fix it, AFTER CLOSING TIME! This guy earned every penny CryCo pays him. Never had the problem since, 80,000 miles later.

You may have taken out the crank sensor or coil
by doing this.
Pull the plug on the coil take a volt meter and
check while cranking
1 wire will vary up and down
1 wire will read a constant voltage
First pull the fuel pump relay before cranking
If no power there are relays and fuses in the
power dist box you need to check

Message: How do you check relays to see if they're good or bad? I checked the coil with an ohm meter. and it's good. I replaced the crank position sensor with a new one. The plug at the bottom of the coil is getting power at one wire only for a second when cranking, then goes dead. The other wire is just dead. What does this mean?

Message: Try swap the ASD relay ( in the underhood fusebox )
with one of the others , or get a new one!
May have blown computer otherwise..

Message: I unwrapped the wires under the fusebox, found the 4-way splice, and checked with a voltmeter and a test light. All wires are hot on both sides of the splice. Splice is good. Re-taped harness and put fusebox back together. I'm getting a fault code of 11 with the check engine light, but as I said, I have a new crank position sensor, and the coil checks good. Also, I have no fuel pressure, checked at the schraeder valve. Now what? The deadly computer?

Message: I switched the AC clutch relay with the ASD relay, and got no difference. The AC clutch relay is unused as I don't have AC. Also tried swapping the starter relay with the ASD relay but still no difference. The starter works with either relay in the starter relay receptacle. Thanks guys for all the suggestions, but no luck so far.

Message: I figured it out. The new crank position sensor I put in was busted. It was pushed up against the flywheel and shattered. The mounting bracket on the replacement sensor is metal, and the original was plastic. The plastic bracket was thicker than the metal one, so the metal one had to be shimmed out with a couple of washers under each bolt hole. Cost me 50 bucks to learn the hard way. But the engine is running now. Sounds good, too. I'll fine-tune and work the bugs out tomorrow. Thanks again guys.
