Subject: ball joints on a 95-96 IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering about the ball joints, i have read alot on how the factory ones are not so good, and was wondering how to tell if they have been replaced? Mine have grease zerks, and feel tight when jacked up, so are chances good mine have been replaced? I have to get the front end aligned because it is wearing the outside edge passenger side tire. Any ideas as to what might cause this and what to check before i take it to the alignment shop?
Thanks guy! chris

Message: I am proud to say that I just completed the removal and replacement of all 4 ball joints on my 98 Dak. Replacement ball joints on the GenIII are bolted in with grade 8 or 10 bolts and locking nuts. I am assuming that the GenII's are the same. If you have rivets holding them in they are original.
By the way, I was suffering from abnormal wear on the passenger tire too, thats when I found the ball joint problem. Jack up the truck using the control arm as the jack point. Raise the tire just off the ground and rock it top to bottom. Any play (any means any) and the ball joinst should be replaced. Alignment will not work if the bj's are worn.
If they are like mine, they arent too hard to replace your self and you can save a bag load of cash in labour costs.
