I bought a '99 Dakota CC last summer with 68K on it. 10 miles from the dealership, the catalitic converter went. The dealership fixed it. Had it dropped off at my house by them and about a week later the truck would rev 500-600 rpms when on the highway. Got that looked at. Over 4 months it took two different transmission companies, one mechanic and $400 to realize it was the speed spensors (which are cheep to replace). The wires were crossed and interfered with the speed when the engine got hot (the long miles on the highway made caused it to occur) Once that was fixed, I have had no problems with it so far, although I'm replacing the front rotors and brakes this weekend.

The cat should never fail. If it did, you have other issues. You are probably running too rich.

Sure Cats fail. I am on my 3rd Cat on my 97 DAK. The first two were from the Dealer. The current one is an aftermarket one and has lasted the longest. And no I do not have any other problems.

Sure cat's fail, but if they do it is not because the cat is bad, it is because the exhaust made the cat fail - ie by running to rich. Cat's do not fail, they fail because the exhaust gases cause them to fail.

Cat's come with a warranty, but only from the manufacturer for defects in manufacturing and if a muffer shop detects the exhaust gases are too rich will not honor the warranty on replacement.

cats do not just break like other parts such as water pumps, timing chains, or values. Something is wrong with the vehicle causing the exhuast to run too rich which causes the element inside to break apart. a cat is just metal and a "honey comb" element. It is heat driven. You are polluting the air more when the vehicle is cold than when hot. This is why you see "smoke" in the winter time when the vehicle is cold but not when it is hot.

They do fail for other reason's than just faulty sensor's. Age is one common factor,I don't care what any one say's. Nothing last forever, and over a period of time they do fail. Do like I did, elimanate the problem and get rid of the Cat.

Sure, but they should last a LONG time. My '95 is on it's 2nd cat, which I installed in Jan of this year. That's 9 years! I had faulty sensors and valves which accelerated the demise of mine.

Dan M,

You might want to do a search on this catalytic converter isssue, its a pretty common problem among Dakotas (i.e. breaking up and rattling around inside casing).

I do not have any problem with my cat, i'm on my 2nd one on my '95. I was merely pointing out that a cat should not fail if the vehicle is running normally. The cat has no moving parts and should not fail as often as it appears some people's are. I'm suggesting if your cat fails it would be a good idea to check out the engine, specifically those parts dealing with air and fuel. You probably have other problems that you should address. If a vehicle is maintained properly you will get years of service out of your cat.
