Subject: Clutch replacement... IP: Logged
Message: i recently got my clutch replaced and it cost a bit more than i was expecting. i just wanted to hear some stories from you guys about your experiences.
I trust my mechanic pretty well so i don't think he was screwing me but it ran about $650 for the clutch and labor and than extra to remachine the flywheel. anyway, it had 80k on it when it went so its not that bad.
any posts would be appreciated, thanx

Message: Dang, and I thought I got ripped off at $350 or $400, can't remember which... Anyhow you would have been much better off to do it yourself and put in a good performance gripping type of clutch, because I've allready had mine replaced under warranty "clutch warranty only after 10,000 miles on the new clutch", due to hot spots on the clutch which = jerking while letting out on the clutch resulting from greese or oil on the clutch or flywheel while installation is taking place, not spinning tires like they try and tell you is the reason for them being there, which I hadn't done anyway due to new tires and clutch, also the guy used air wrenches to install the flywheel and clutch, so I also know that even the newer clutch is screwed... I thought it was esspecially kinda funny when the mechanic had to take the transmission back out because the newest clutch wouldn't disengage at all... I knew it was because he tightened down one side all the way with the air wrench instead of going around like tightening down head bolts, but I didn't say anything, because every time I would question anything they did, I would get some kind of weird look along with some explanation as to why it's the best way "the way they were doing it"... He also lost my oil cap off of the motor while he was changing the clutch, because he had to take the oil filter off to take out one of the bolts with the air wrech, they just don't beleive in using hand wrenches, which I also found kinda funny and interresting...
The next one I'll be putting in myself to make sure of proper torque and installation... Also I have never went back to this guy since then due to his bad mechanicing skills... Also I noticed one of the other mechanics there using belt dressing on a serpentine belt and wondering why it was still squelling even worse... Thought about telling him why, but didn't want to hear another long reason as to the belt dressing is suppost to work on all kinds of belts like I'm sure he would have given me...
