Message: It's a complete unit with the fuel pump and all can be found in the fuel tank.
It is also easier to remove the bed than drop the tank.
With a couple of frienda to lift the bed off the job rates "easy"
I have also have a 94 and did the job myself (including removing the bed) as the pump had died. This was done in a 2 car garage with no lift

Message: It was replaced last fall at about 160k kms. It was starting to go about 20k kms earlier as I the truck would appear to stall out when I floored it while going up steep grades in the rockies.
I live near sea level and never noticed it before then it just died on my wife one night. I tried fro 45 min in the pouring rain to get it going with no luck until a frien who drives a towtruck said to tap the tank, which I did with a steering wheel club, and I heard the pump kick in and the truck started.
It's been running fine since I changed it.
Back to your question: The truck is from Newfoundland, east coast and the fuel tends to be old and dirty, compared to pumps and fuel filters I've seen removed on the West coast.

Message: I dont know what you guys are talkin about, the fuel filter is on the drivers side frame rail just behind the cab before the tank. 10 min and you can change it. there is a filter on the pump in the tank too, but that is not designed to be replaced periodically, that is all one unit with the pump and sending unit assembly (i changed it this summer).

Message: The 94 only has one filter and it's inside the tank as part of the fuel pump module. I replaced mine by dropping the tank. My tank was already close to empty so it was quick and easy. Took about 2 hours by way of dropping the tank, removing the bed if you have help would be easy as well. good luck.

Message: j.shorty,
I can't answer how much a filter costs, I replaced the whole unit. I had no problem finding the fule pump module at Advanced Auto, $160. The tank is fairly simple to drop, raise the truck on 4 jackstands, place a tranny jack or floor jack under the center tank, diconnect all wires and hoses, loosen tank strap nuts, lower the tank.

Message: The fuel filter was put in the tank on the 94s.
My 92 and your 93 has a filter on the frame rail and a sock in the tank.
I guess they figured the pumps go out often enough you can change the filter with the pump....

Message: 94 Dakota Fuel filter and pump located on top of
the fuel tank.I have loosened the tank strap bolts
but the straps won't move.I am currently siphoning
the fuel out. You have to remove the fuel tank
"stem" from the tank to get a siphon hose directly
in the tank. The "stem" contains an anti theft
device, a floating ball, which prevents a hose
going through the "stem". Stem- that part of the
fuel filler system that is sticking out of the
fuel tank. Mine came out out easily.
If I can't remove the straps, I am going to lift
the bed as described in the above comments.
Thanks for the information.

Message: Chuck only 8 bolts hold the bed on, tail gate
removes easy to reduce weight and all the tail light
wires unplug at the harness underneath..
Way easier going from the top rather then dropping
the tank...
