Message: "Then you can do your rockers and timing advance... Oh from dyno test you should be able to expect 4 - 6 hp from regular 1.6 ratio and around 15 hp for the 1.7 crower rockers... All of the things your doing should coincide each other quite nicely... "
I think that when I feel the need to get that far into mine, I'll replace the cam instead of going to 1.7 rockers. After all, when you pull everything off the front and pull the stock rockers, you are only one step from a cam replacement. Ok, maybe two steps, you have to remove the manifold. Wait, why not replace the heads too while you are at it and um ahhh.....
Oh, nevermind.

Message: So, would you guys recommend the 3.91 gears after the other mods?

Message: Your gas milage will likely suffer, especially if you drive a lot of highway miles. Around town it can actually increase gas milage if you keep your foot out of it.
What is your ultimate goal?

Message: Well, my ultimate goal is to drive at 75 mph down the interstate and be able to maintain 4th gear. As it is, it shifts in and out of overdirve so much at 70+ or against even a mild wind that I figures the 3.91 gears may help eliminate that.

Message: It might help, but it sounds like you have other problems that should be addressed first. I would start by checking the TV cable adjustment and look for possible vacuum leaks. Not even a four cylinder should act like that.

Message: As I understood, it's common on V6 Dakotas. They are so wind resistant and not enough power, they have trouble keeping up speed. So, the speed falls, it shifts to 3rd, gets up to speed, back to fourth. Over and over.
Hopefully after I get the timing chain replaced, it will gain lost timing and have enough power to maintain speed on the interstate. If that and the 1.7 roller rockers don't bring the power up enough to maintain the speed, I figured the 3.91 gears would.

Message: I made a switch from 3.55s to 4.10s running the stock 31s
At 75mph in 3rd it ran a little under 3,500 rpm
In 4th at 75mph it was a little over 2,500rpm
I gained the use of overdrive. (35 mph head winds it starts to slow though)
My highway mpg went up surprisingly. It was an average of 13.5-13.8mpg and after the gear swap went to 14.8-15mpg.
City mileage stayed the same though still my crappy 13.5 mpg
I account the higher highway mileage to the gain of overdrive and it not having to be floored to keep its speed in overdrive... This isnt the first time ive seen gearing setup wrong.
Btw for the record im running...
1.7RR, moded intake manifold, home brew intake, moded tb, exhaust, iat relocate, 180 stat, underdrive pulley,
All the same mods before and after the gear swap and it still didnt have enough power in my QC to keep overdrive going.
