Subject: trans, distrib problem???

I have a 88 dakota 4x4, carborated 3.9L that seems to drop cylinders ( bucks ) only does this at 55mph until last night it wouldnt go over 45mph before bucking and down to 35mph up hill. Sometimes you might get up to 60mph going down hill only to go 35mph up the other side (that sucked) didnt know if I was going to make it home. I've put a new cap, rotor, wires and even new distributer pick-up (no plugs) and it still does this bucking at 55mph and if I give it more gas it does worsen and takes a while to recover. Now if I start out in 2nd gear and go upto 45-55mph it doesnt do this. Could the problem be in the trany or the distributer or ?????. Is there any known vacum problems that might cause this to happen? The plugs are a yr old and I didnt think they would need replacing yet. Its a good truck and I'd hate to take it to the bone yard and its not worth rebuilding the trany for 1800.00 when I paid 1400.00 for the whole truck.
